Hello,

My name is Syler and I will be helping you to solve your Malware issues. If you have since resolved your issues I would appreciate if you
would let me no so I can close this topic, if you still need help please let me no what issues you are still having, in your next reply.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and
we are trying our best to keep up.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

  1. Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  2. Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  3. Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  4. Double click on Gmer to run it.
  5. Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  6. You may see a rootkit warning window, If you do, click No.
  7. Untick the following boxes on the right side of the Gmer screen.
    Sections
    IAT/EAT
    Files
    Show All
  8. Click on and wait for the scan to finish.
  9. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  10. Push and save the logfile to your desktop.
  11. Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Then please post back here with the following:
  • log.txt
  • info.txt
  • Gmer log

Thanks

Hi David,

I don't see any problems in your logs, can you tell me what problems you are currently having?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Note: If you already have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, just update then run it.
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan (the scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient).
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply .
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

DEP reports that it has closed WMI to protect my computer on just about every boot... figured it was malware of some description. Before taking to the Forum, I had run MalWarebites and ComboFix.. neither found anything... figured I had a root kit

I would still like you to run MBAM, it's gets updated daily and if you do have malware on your machine you could have picked up more.
Please post the combofix log aswell C:\ComboFix.txt

I don't see anything wrong in your logs, if chkdsk keeps running and finding bad sector then it sounds like you hard drive
is starting to fail, you should consider backing up your important data if you haven't done so already, I would like to see
one other scan.

Download and Run Rooter SD

Please download Rooter.exe and save it to your desktop
  • Double-click it to start the tool. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose Run As Administrator...
  • Alow it to run when you get a Security Warning.
  • At the main control page, please click the green button.
  • It will now begin to scan, please be paitent. The scan should not take more than 3 minutes
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open soon. It can also be found at %systemdrive%\Rooter$\Rooter_1.txt
  • Now push the button to close Rooter.
  • Please post the contents of that log file here in your next reply.

The Rooter.txt has been uploaded. Since we last coresponded.. I managed to hose myself by following the directions to remove corrupted Norton databae, that, BTW, was the problem with my chkdsk allways running at boot .... found that on a Norton Forum... How much you wanna bet it was causing my WMI error as well!

The hose... starting in Safe mode with DVI... could not see a damn thing until I figured it out....

Here's hoping your eval of this scan is clean and the very thing that was **supposed** to help be actually cased me all this grief. Let me know either way... I'd like to contribute at the end of this ordeal.

Hi,

Well I have heard of Norton causing some issues but thats a new one to me, I will remember that. Glad to hear it solved the chkdsk problem,
has the WMI issue also subsided now?

That log looks ok let's do one final check to confirm your clean.

You have a seriously outdated version of java installed, please uninstall it and install the latest version from here.

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

Please do a scan with ESET OnlineScan

Note: If you run this in a browser other than IE you will be asked to download and install esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe
  • Click the button.
  • Check
  • Click the button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser and allow it to install the ActiveX control.
  • Check
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push
  • Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the button.
  • Push

Then in your next reply, please let me know if you are having any more problems and post back here with the following logs:
  • ESET report
  • New Rsit log.txt

Thanks

Eset found no problem and did not produce a log (I "searched" but did not find). Since we last corresponded, I purchased Spinrite and ran a surface Scan on by HDD ... It confirmed the one bad sector Dell Diag's turned up.. nothing more. Considering all the scans, is it a good probability that my computer is "clean" and a likely cause of my Chkdsk (always 16k and always pertaining to the Norton Db) and WMI error is Norton?
