F8 Disabled during restart

I got a nasty bit of virus this afternoon, and since I had all my needed data backed up externally, I decided to just go ahead with a factory image restore.

However, when i tap f8 like my manual says to while the system is starting up, NOTHING HAPPENS!

I can get my computer into safe mode by doing a hard shut down (I think that's what you call it... holding the power button down till it shuts down) but am not really sure what to do next.

I am running windows vista

Any help is greatly appreciated!
