I came back to my computer this morning and had the Blue Screen of Death with the following error message:

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC000001D, 0x80537008, 0xBA4CB3B8, 0xBA4CB0B4)

So first I tried to boot in safe mode and that didn't go so good. It gets the the driver Mup.sys and hangs.

I did a lilttle research and decided to run chkdsk. I booted from the install CD and got into Recovery Console.

Then ran chkdsk c: /r

I then tried to boot again, but the problem is still the same.

What next?

Seems to be a common problem:

Budapest:

You were right on. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!

I had a feeling that Windows Update had caused the problem as there were
some registry changes that happened at about 4:00 AM the night this problem
appeared. I followed the instructions in: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/spuninst.htm

The first one I removed was KB9777165. The computer then booted up normally.

Now, will Windows Update leave me alone. How important is this update? Should
I try it again? I don't think I'll be doing that.

Thanks again for the help
