Hello, I'm not sure if what I had previously removed helps at all, but I'll describe what symptoms and steps I took from the beginning...

I first realized I had some sort of spyware on my computer when I started experiencing a lot of random tabs opening to completely different websites in Firefox while I was web browsing... I would never open up to an actual site, the browser would remain blank. So I ran a scan using Adaware... since this is a shared netbook, I never found out what turned up in the search as someone else had closed the results. When I tried to run further diagnostics, I soon realized that I was seeing a completely different type of malware/spyware (I didn't know) which turned out to be the Your PC Protector Malware. I followed directions from this site to remove it. I successfully did so and ran more scans using Malwarebytes, AVG, Spybot and Threatfire. These programs found several other trojans and spyware installed on my computer... I removed them. When I thought my computer was clean, I tried surfing around and saw that any links I search for in Google would navigate me to a completely unrelated website. This is where I'm stuck.

I followed the directions in the Prep Guide, but unfortunately ran into problems when running Gmer. Gmer would always freeze and I would have to forcibly restart my computer. I'm not sure what I need to do to get it to run properly. I do, however, have the DDS logs which are posted/attached as instructed.

Thanks in advance to who ever takes on my problem... I greatly appreciate it!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
[We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    netsvcs
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

please run a scan with gmer next:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Hello,

I attempted to run gmer last night, but my system rebooted in the middle of the scan. So today, I tried to boot in safe mode in order to retry the gmer scan... I did this by running 'msconfig' and checking the 'Safe Mode' option under the 'BOOT' tab and restarting my system. I am now stuck in a bit of a loop... my computer refuses to start in any other mode except 'Safe Mode' due to the options I had set earlier, and Safe Mode does not seem to work at all. It will spit out some text and then throw me back to the same screen that has me choose from a list of booting options. I guess Safe Mode has been disabled somehow?

Hi

do you have a Windows CD handy? Do you know if the recovery console is installed on the PC?

Yes, I have a Windows CD... however, this problem is occuring on my netbook, which does not have an optical drive. Unfortunately, I do not have an external optical drive. I will see if there is a recovery console on the netbook itself when I get home later tonight.

Are you thinking that the only way to fix this is to boot from the cd?

Hi,

if this is a netbook you should definitely have the recovery console preinstalled on the system and we should be able to fix it from the recovery console.

If that isn't possible I'll link you instructions for a bootable flash drive and we will boot from that.

Hello,

So, it seems that there is a recovery mode I can choose, but when I select that option it doesn't get very far before spitting out a bunch of text and throwing me to the selection screen again. I think I may need the link for the bootable flash drive since this doesn't seem to be working.

Hi,
You can find instructions on making a bootable Hiren's flash drive here: Link.

It says that you can copy the files from Hiren's Boot-CD. Are you familiar with CD emulation? If so, there is no need to burn the CD, you can load the iso and copy the files from the virtual CD-drive.
If not please either burn the CD and copy the files from there, or let me know and I'll extract the files and upload them for you.

Thanks very much! I'm not familiar with cd emulation at all, so I will burn a cd and copy from there. I'll let you know if I encounter any issues.

Hi myrti,

I'm in the process of creating a bootable usb... I have gotten to step 3, which is running grubinst_gui... My set up is not exactly the same as is in the screenshots, but I gathered that I want to choose the device to install to, which is my flash drive. So I chose the smaller of the 2 hd's that were showing up and the application told me that it had been successfully installed. However, when I navigate to my flash drive, I don't see anything there. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, I took a look at the instructions for burning the bootable cd and I'm afraid they were a little unclear for me and I don't have the knowledge to try and figure it out... would you mind uploading the files I need to download to my usb drive?

Thank you so much.

Elaine

Hi,

I uploaded the files here: http://rapidshare.com/files/336487970/HBCD.zip.html

Just extract the folder HBCD and place it on your dlash drive. You need to have the other files extracted there as well: grdlr, menu.lst and so on. Did you copy them over?

Hello,

Yes, I've copied over menu.lst and grldr to my USB drive, since that is what was detailed in the instructions... I'm in the process of downloading HBCD right now. So, according to the screenshot from Hiren's instructions, I am missing the autorun.inf. Is that ok?
