After seemingly resolving a Google redirect problem yesterday, I see that my laptop remains infected (or has been re-infected) today.
EDIT: I've seen this mentioned on other forums too; MBAM gave me only apparent results.

I followed the Prep Guide instructions posted on this forum; the DDS log is pasted below. I ran GMER twice-- first time my laptop froze, second time I got a blue screen.
EDIT: I ran GMER in Safe Mode last night for 10+ hours before interrupting the scan.

Thanks in advance for your help!
EDIT: Please help!

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi-- and thanks for offering me some help!

I've just run DDS again, and the log is posted below (I've also included the attachment it generated). Before running DDS I disabled as many AVG components as I could.

Let me know what to do next!

P.S. The DDS.pif link you provided loaded a page with gibberish in Firefox, so I used the other one (DDS.scr) instead.

Hello PubliusVeto

My online alias is Blade Zephon, or Blade for short, and I will be assisting you with your malware issues!

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Before we begin cleaning your machine, I'd like to lay out some guidelines for us to follow while we are working together.
  • I will be assisting you with your malware issues. This may or may not resolve other problems you are having with your computer. If you are still having problems after your machine has been determined clean, I will be glad to direct you to the proper forum for assistance.
  • Even if things appear better, that does not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions until I give you the all clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that all the malware has been removed. If a piece of the infection is left, it can regenerate and reinfect your machine.
  • Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • I ask that you please refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. If you act independently it will cause changes to your system that I will not be aware of, which will make the process of cleaning the machine a much slower and more difficult process. Additionally, some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
  • Please perform all steps in the order received. If you are unsure or confused about any instructions I give you, you should ask me to clarify before doing anything. Additionally, if you run into any problems while carrying out instructions, you should STOP and reply back here explaining what happened.
  • After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. If you need additional time, that is perfectly alright; you just need to let us know beforehand. smile.gif

***************************************************

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to renamed.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double click on renamed.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

~Blade

In your next reply, please include the following:

Hi Blade,

Thanks for the reply. A couple questions before I proceed with ComboFix:

1. Has the recent ComboFix problem been resolved already? I recall reading on this forum (or perhaps another? I can't remember now) that there was an issue with a recent build of it, leading to hard-drive trouble. Please advise.

2. Regarding bullet 4 in your post: May I enable AVG while connected to the Internet and/or checking email? I can easily NOT use other troubleshooting software during this process... but please clarify that piece of instruction before I proceed. I would hate to get my computer infected by something else, all while checking my email to carry out these steps!

I'll gladly download & run ComboFix, as per your instructions, once I hear from you about these two questions.

Many thanks,

Publius

Yes, that issue has been resolved. Additionally, if you somehow do experience complications, I am fully trained in dealing with the situation, and am able to contact the developer of the tool for further assistance if necessary. smile.gif

Hello PubliusVeto.

1. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/294041/google-redirect-via-asklots-this-time/

Collect::
c:\windows\system32\c_10001T.dll

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

2. Close any open browsers.

3. VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

~Blade

Hi Blade,

Before I ran ComboFix (according to your instructions), it updated via an Internet connection. Also, as noted in the log, it uploaded files at the end of its run.

Before running ComboFix, I disabled AVG 9 and Spyware Doctor; then I enabled both of them again. Spyware Doctor now IDs 111 instances of an infection under the heading "Application.NirCmd"-- which I'd like to quarantine. (Before the restart, it IDed a "Trojan.Generic" something or other... which it now doesn't find.) Please advise.

Otherwise, my computer seems to be okay now-- no redirects in Firefox in the 5 mins after a restart, anyway. But I saw this last time too; after an apparent resolution, it took the redirect issue about one day to reappear.

The new CF log is pasted below.

Publius.

Hello PubliusVeto

Glad to hear things are looking better.

Spyware Doctor now IDs 111 instances of an infection under the heading "Application.NirCmd"-- which I'd like to quarantine.

Before we do that, is there a log or report that you can have Spyware Doctor generate so that I can see exactly what's being flagged as infected? Spyware Doctor sometimes has false positives.

Hopefully the redirect issue will not reappear this time. Continue putting the computer through it's paces and let me know if it recurs. smile.gif

Hi Blade,

I don't see any log-generator in Spyware Doctor (I'm using the free version)... If I can make a log though, I'll post it here.

Hopefully this problem won't recur; in the event that it does, I'll reply to this thread and/or start a new one.

Thank you for your help-- I really appreciate it!

Publius.

Sorry-- one last thing...

Are there any scans you recommend that I run on external hard-drives?

You should be able to direct your onboard AntiVirus to scan an external drive.

***************************************************
  • Click on Start>Run
  • Now type combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the "x" and "/".
  • You will then recieve a message letting you know that Combofix was uninstalled Successfully.
This will remove files/folders associated with combofix and uninstall it.

***************************************************

Your machine appears to be clean!

I highly recommend that you read through the below set of very helpful suggestions and implement them; they will help protect you from reinfection
I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • By updating your machine, you have one less headache!
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish, you can also use automatic updates. This is a good thing to have if you want to be up-to-date all the time, but can also be a bit of an annoyance due to its handling and the sizes of the updates. If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.
  • If you do not want to have automatic updates turned on, or are on dial-up, you can always download updates seperately at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

For a nice list of freeware programs in all categories, please have a look at this thread with freeware products that are regarded as useful by the users of this forum: Commonly Used Freeware Replacements.

Another recommendation, is to download HostsMan. It safeguards you with a regularly updated Hosts-file that blocks dangerous sites from opening. This adds another bit of safety while surfing the Internet. For installlation and setting up, follow these steps:
  1. Double-click the Downloaded installer and install the tool to a location of your choice
  2. Via the Startmenu, navigate to HostsMan and run the program.
    1. Click "Hosts" in the menu
    2. Click "Manage Updates" in the submenu
    3. Out of the three, select at least one of them (I have MVPS Host as my main one)
    4. Click "Add Update." After that you will only need to click on the following button to retrieve updates:
  3. Click the X to exit the program.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help and if there any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BC, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!
