I have been 'working' to clean my computer for several weeks now. I have tried, NAV, Spybot, Ad-Aware; I have ZoneAlarm installed; I have Window Washer. I installer the Google Toolbar, but the 'bug' dismisses that.

I noticed the 'PROBLEM' when the 'bug' took over my home page default to 'about:blank'. I could key in an alternative, but it would change back once I exited and reentered IE6 (SP1).

Popups occur very frequently, and after I 'clean' the computer with NAV, Spybot, Ad-Aware, the same stuff is back again the next time I access the internet.

During the current 'cleansing', I followed the instructions in the tutorial.

I ran the TrendMicro anaylsis...message...cannot remove/delete "Troj DYFUCA.M...in use

I tried to run the Panda scan, but I could never get it to d/l the software (I tried 5 times on 2 different days.

I next ran Spybot 5.1...43 problems fixed, 8 not fixed (recommended I reboot).

I next ran Ad-Aware SE Personal (1.3),,,'C:\WINNT\localNRD.dll could not be removed...recommended I reboot.

I rebotted...Spybot ran on startup and removed 2 entries; Ad-AWare ran on startup and remove 7 critical elements.

Then I ran Hijackthis....the contents of the log is below:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2

Hi polaris6,

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:

Getservices.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Print this instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

You need to unzip HijackThis to a folder other than the Temp directory or Desktop. Unzip HijackThis! to it's own folder, e.g. c:/hjt .

1. Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

2. Run this registry script, which forces Windows to show so called "superhidden" files:
Copy the contents of the Quote box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as Unhide.reg (make sure to save as type: "All Files")

Doubleclick Unhide.reg, and answer 'yes' when prompted to add its contents to the Registry, then restart your computer.

This is only for XP or 2000 systems.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001

3. REBOOT into SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method.

4. Run HijackThis!, press "Scan" and tick the boxes next to all these, close all other windows and browsers, then press "Fix Checked" button.

This is for 'cryo':

I will be away from this computer for about a week. I will perform all those operations you suggest and post the Hijackthis log in about a week.

Thanks again.

I don't understand your question. Are you asking if I know what that program is/does? If my interpretation is correct, I DO NOT know what that program is/does?

Thanks

george

"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001

3. REBOOT into SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method.

4. Run HijackThis!, press "Scan" and tick the boxes next to all these, close all other windows and browsers, then press "Fix Checked" button.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows SyncroAd] C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd\SyncroAd.exe

5. Search for these files and delete them if found:
C:\WINNT\system32\w?nlogon.exe <-- this file
If there are two files with the same name (winlogon.exe) in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder, delete the non-Microsoft file. To check which one is legit right click each file and select Properties. The legit Windows file is Windows NT Logon Application (Description in General tab).

Delete these folders:
Windows SyncroAd in C:\Program Files\

6. Empty the Recycle Bin.

7. REBOOT normally. Run HijackThis! again and post a new log.

Log looks clean...great job polaris6 ! :thumbsup:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

    Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

    Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

I have the Windows 2000 OS. In your advice to maintain a clean computer, you provided instructions for Windows XP and ME. Did you intend to have ME be a substitute for 2000?
