This may be a little vaig but the laptop in question is my daughter's and she is 250 miles from me so we are dealing with it by phone.

Ok, It's a Toshiba Laptop about 2-3 years old running XP pro.

For no reason at all (as far as she tells me) when she switched it on today a message on a black screen said something like windows could not load due to possibly a hardware problem.

I ran her through with my limited knowledge.....ie switch off then start while tapping F8 which she did and from there we tried starting windows 1st normally, then safe mode and finally in last known working mode.

Each time it fired up a screen full of commands then went off then went to the blue start up screen for a second but then returned to the original black screen with a warning that windows had to shut down and so on!

Any help appreciated but remember please I have only just a bit above average computer knowledge

You can use this page to maybe help back up her stuff.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...ndows-computer/
As a bonus, if the above cd boots and works normally, you have ruled out actual hardware problems.

Troubleshooting bsod can be trying at times and almost never works as a threeway/ relay process.

Toshibas have recovery dvd sets and usually a recovery partition.
This is the toshiba pdf of how to reload the system to factory out of box.

Post more details of the model and part number and we can be more detailed in response. I have five toshiba laptops spanning a decade. I also have nearly a dozen dead ones useful only for parts. Some toshiba models have known flaws but every laptop brand does.

Things are not going as they should

This is what is happening now....

Switch on laptop while tapping F8

Chose start in safe mode with prompts

Black screen with white commands over whole screen

After 20 seconds or so chose windows xp pro.

After this the pc should start in safe mode but my daughter's laptop shuts down and restarts with a message that windows has failed to open successfully

Help! (please)

Looks like a uk only model:
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/inn...amp;startPage=1

The uk site is quite unfamiliar to me. I can't find any of the details I would know where to look for on the us site.

If you did not understand the links I provided, you probably should take it to a shop.

If it won't boot into safe mode the bsod /reboot may be hardware related.
