After I restart the computer, it never fails, that the first time I try to open the Start Menu it hangs, making it impossible to open anything and I get the following error. The menu will stay like this for anything up to five minutes, making the whole system hang, before it unfreezes and the error window disappears.

Is there any kind of fix for this annoying problem?

Try to boot the computer in Safe mode and then check whether the same problem exists. In safe mode if it works fine then it might be some software causing the problem.
To get into safe mode. Turn on the computer and when you see the computer manufacture logo keep taping f8 on keyboard. You should see "Safe mode".

You're right, must be a software based problem. After I booted into safemode the start menu didn't hang.

ekrn.exe is part of ESET NOD32
Do you use it?

Going from what the event log says as you've pointed out, nod 32 is certainly the problem. Unfortunately. in recent days, while troubleshooting this hanging problem, I've not only unistalled Nod, but completely removed and upgraded it. There has been no changes with the problem though, whatsoever. So, unless I can improve the compatibility between Nod and my OS, I guess I will have to change my AV brand.

Any suggestions of a suitable alternative to No Eset 32? An economical one, that is:mellow:

Sure, no need to pay for anything
Not AVG, though, please.

First of all, use ESET NOD32 Removal Tool: http://www.nod32.nl/download/tool/nod32removal.exe

Then...

- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira..._antivirus.html
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use Comodo firewall..
If you decide to install Comodo Internet Security, or just Comodo firewall, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.
