This has been driving me crazy since yesterday morning.

I can't connect to the Internet except through Internet Explorer/ I cannot update or connect to the online features of

a) Ad-aware
b) Norton Antivirus
c) AVG Antivirus
d) [online game] windows client
e) FireFox (Cannot find pages)
f) ThunderBird
g) anything else I've tried

I don't know too much about computers but here's what I've tried.

System restore, ipconfig /release>ipconfig /renew, Repair connection, hardware scan (all hardware is working), Shutdown all firewall/antivirus software, Left off over a long period of time, Dell Tech Support (Ha!)

Here are a few interesting things to note...

I am running on a network through a Linksys wireless router, the other computer on the network (the wireless one) Is working fine, except that it can't access this computer.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 installed.

My Windows Firewall is turned OFF.

I am running ZoneAlarm Pro, Adaware Plus, Adwatch, Registry Mechanic, Diskeeper, Panda Active Scan (free), PcPitstop (free), PcPitstop Optimize.

I would be very grateful for any help you could give.

Sincerely,

Mr Binante

Did you upgrade ZoneAlarm recently? The new version has been causing lots of problems similar to what you describe.

Yes, But even after shutting down ZoneAlarm I still could only connect to Internet Explorer. Also the computer was working fine, went into the otehr room, came back, and had this problem.

If at all possible connect the computer directly to the modem and bypass the router this will tell us if it is a router or computer issue.

Ya spyware was my first thought also, but I seen you were running several spyware programs.
Ad-Aware which is a good program. (Highly Recommended)
I have my suspicions about PCPitStop & Optimizer, seen some things saying it was alright but I have not seen any Spyware Pros suggesting it.

Here is a couple that I use on a regular basis.
See this article:
Taking out the Trash
Try these free tools.
Trendmicro (free virus scan only)
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Spybot S&D (update after installing)

A good Trojan Scanner (free)
Ewido

Tried HouseCall, Didn't work. Downloaded Spybot but it won't connect to the internet to update.

I will download the update file to the other computer and burn it to a CD.

In the mean time I'll try the other suggestion and run spybot un-updated.

Try this:
Winsock XP Fix
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

See if it restores your connectivity.

If not - make sure that the Windows firewall is turned off and the programs you are experiencing nonconectivity with are listed in ZoneAlarm as authorized.
