Yesterday the computer spontaneously crashed and when I started to check I fount that McAfee reported it had found an Exploit-PDF.q.gen!stream at approx 12:49pm. Since then it has locked up numerous times and generally not worked well. System logs show some odd services being started at about the time of the detection, plus some DCOM errors that look odd and a exe in windows temp called gur13.exe. McAfee quick scan reports a clean system, MS Malicious removal tool also gives a clean bill of helath but I can't run the full McAfee scan as the computer will lock before it finished (randomly). When it locks task manager indicates no cpu activity on any process. Keyborad or mouse clicks fill the buffer until it beeps, a rebott is the only fix I have found. Extracts from the system event log are below, I think the interesting ones are from about 12:50pm on Thursday. I cleaned all the temp internet files and cookies and even re-located the temp internet folder. I reloaded McAfee (I have to use McAfee for business comapibilty), new version is up to date, but in doing so I've lost the logs from yesterday. All critical Windows patches claim to be applied. Computer is 2 months old (home office), other computers on the network are not exhibiting any problems that I know of (yet). I've kept the bad computer on an isolated network since yesterday, but will probably need to check the others too once I work out what is wrong with this one. A friend recommended combofix ? Plan B is simply to re-format the disk and re-install. ANy help would be appreciated.

Update. Sorry for trying multiple things in parallel but I have big time pressure to get this fixed (4pm today). If I can't resolve in the next 2 hours I'll probably have to re-load the OS. Malwarebytes (recommended by a different friend) reported and fixed the following: As I have McAfee the MS Security alerts are probably a red herring. I'm going re-do the scan and try then re-try the McAfee scan too. If they pass I'll close this topic.

OK, no better. Still hangs up, including while running the Malwarebytes scan to check. Poo! mad.gif

Also had another of the BITS gu*.exe errors and another DCOM (though I thought I'd turned teh DCOM off). Very odd. Any body know what these are ? Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to hit the big re-format button unless anyone has any quick reply.

In that case, I'm afraid you should plan for doing a reformat and clean install. We have a huge backlog of topics, and it would take us about a week to get to you.

OK, thanks. I'm going to have to hit it with the sledgehammer and re-load clean.
