<<CPU spikes on anything open...>>

For how long? The CPU usage normally spikes when anything is done, IME.

Sustained spiking...is a different matter, to be examined by using a tool like Process Explorer.

What programs/services are running when these "crswls" occur?

Spikes to 100 at times randomly. I have been mon. with Process Exp for a while. It seems to bounce between system, hardware interupts and dpc's. If I start any one program it jumps to 100 and stays for a while at times. At other times it backs down to 20 or 30. However, when rebooted same background operations run at 0 cpu according to ProcX.

Could it be a memory leak or a slowdown in swapping over time? And what are the odds its pointing to a hardrive failure, etc? Worse after a few hours. Temps seem in range.
