Hello Sirs and Madams of BleepingComputer,

While using Firefox, the fake antivirus program Internet Security 2010 was loaded onto my computer when I visited a "watch-movies-online" website. The computer got very slow and the fake antivirus program window opened up. I used rkill to close the program and used MalwareBytes to get rid of it ( I think it is gone).

However, now my computer is very, very slow and AVG Resident Shield has been reporting many Backdoor trojans on my computer like Trojan Horse Backdoor.Generic12.ADHQ Trojan horse FakeAlert.OP Trojan Horse Crypt.LWC

AVG even says that iexplore.exe, avgtray.exe, firefox.exe, explorer.exe, HJLy5Gcxq.exe (The Malwarebytes new exe I downloaded as per IS2010 removal instructions on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...t-security-2010 ) are infected by one or more of the above trojans.

Again, my computer is very slow and sometimes I get a message saying that the computer is running out of visual memory; this never happened before, I'm positive something is going very wrong.

Also, when I open rootrepeal.exe I get an error message "FOPS - DeviceIoControl Error! Error Code = 0xc0000001 Extended Info 90x000000a0)" The log of this error is attached as rootrepealerror.txt

When I try to do report and then scan I am able to select the checkboxes and the C:\ drive but after that rootrepeal crashes with the message "Could not initialize driver! Please contact the author" Then "Error dumping SSDT (0xc0000001)!" Then "Attempt to read from address: 0x00000004" Then "DeviceIoControl Error! Error Code = 0x0" Then rootrepeal crashes. I found a folder with the crash log. It is attached as RootRepeal_crash_020410.213650.txt

I am not sure whether some bad files are in quarantine of Malewarebytes or AVG; I hope to find all bad files and delete them permanently, if possible.

DDS was successful and the results are attached.

You all helped my friend with his infected computer and he is forever grateful for your help. I thank you in advance; I know you all are volunteers with a great passion for helping others.

Thank you very much! smile.gif

I can't wait to get started busting up some viruses and regaining my trusty steed! smile.gif

Edit - I also am being redirected from google search results to dodgy antivirus/antispyware program advertisements.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Hi Blind Faith,

Thanks for advancing my topic smile.gif

I've had an Internet Security 2010 Infection and I think I've gotten rid of IS 2010 using rkill and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. But my computer is extremely and frustratingly slow. I have gotten search redirects from google to dodgy antivirus advertisements, and the icons's filenames on my desktop are outlined in white (this has never happened before until the infection).

What I have done since last post: I did a full system scan with MalwareBytes and quarantined the resulting 40-50 or so files. The infections were (Trojan.Doppler, Trojan.FakeAlert, Rogue.Installer, Malware.Trace, Trojan.Vundo.H, Trojan.Hiloti, Worm.P2P, Adware.MiniBug, Hijack.Display Properties, Rogue.InternetSecurity2010, Hijack.UserInit, Spyware.MarketScore)

I quarantined a bunch of Trojan Horse files that were originally detected by AVG Resident Shield. (Trojan Horse BackDoor.Generic.12.ADHQ, Trojan Horse FakeAlert.OP, Trojan Horse Crypt.LWC)

I'm concerned that AVG resident shield has reported that the processes of AVG and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware were infected by the above trojan horses, so I'm not sure how to fix this.

I can post the Malware Bytes scan detection logs and the AVG resident shield detection list for further detail (includes the names of the files infected) - if necessary

***Edit - Please note that GMER log is attached as "ark.txt" and Attach.txt is the extra log from dds

Hi and welcome to the HijackThis Logs and Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum,

I am thcbytes and I am here to help you!

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Please perform all steps in the order received and do not proceed if you need clarification.

Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems please stop and tell me about it. When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide you with detailed suggestions for prevention.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if your topic is not replied I we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.

I would also like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please be courteous and appreciative for the assistance provided!

Again I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so. Your computer fix will be based on the current condition of your computer! Any changes might delay my ability to help you.

excl.gif P2P Warning excl.gif

Your log indicates that you have uTorrent installed.

Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs.

- They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.

- Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.

- The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications. Read P2P Software User Advisories and Risks of File-Sharing Technology.

Note: It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, then you will get infected again.
I would recommend that you uninstall uTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel>> Add / Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

==========

You still have some components of McAfee and Norton AV running on your computer in addition to AVG.

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Please run both of these uninstallers....

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Download Link #1.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the RKill desktop icon.
    If you are using Vista please right click and run as Admin!
  • A black screen will briefly flash indicating a successful run.
  • If this does not occur please delete that application and download Link #2.
  • Continue process until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links tell me about it.
  • It shall produce a log located at C:\RKill. Please copy and paste it into your next reply.

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)

You must rename it before saving it.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

Save thcbytes.exe to your Desktop <-- Important!!!
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Please refer to this link for instructions.

  • Double click on thcbytes.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

==========

With your next post please provide:

* Any troubles with the uninstallers?
* RKill log
* Combofix log

Kind regards,
~t

Hi thcbytes,

Thank you for helping me. I hope you are having a nice weekend smile.gif

I have taken your advice and uninstalled uTorrent.

I also used the uninstallers to get rid of Norton and McAfee.
(I had to uninstall Norton Utillities 2002 from Add/Remove Programs before running the Norton Uninstaller. The program asked if I wanted to remove some files from A "Symantic Shared" Folder; the program said that these files were thought to be no longer in use but may be used by other programs. I said "Yes To All" to delete all of them. I hope this is okay)

I ran rkill.pif Here is the log:

This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.
Ran as Vir Singh on 02/14/2010 at 9:14:59.

Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:

==========

When the computer restarted and combofix was saying don't run any new programs until combofix finishes, an error message popped up saying something like
Could not find ugeridas.dll
under that it either said "Program cannot start" or "Program terminated"

It was a very unspecific error message - It did not say which program it was that could not start
I think that this error came from a malware program and it must be good that it could not start smile.gif

==========

Thanks again for helping. The computer seems to be running better and faster with less stress.
I just want to be sure that we got it all.
I will await further instruction.

Well done. thumbup2.gif

excl.gif Warning: This script was specifically written and designed for this user only. Unsupervised use of this tool could render your computer unbootable permanently!! excl.gif

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Could not find ugeridas.dll

Your OS is looking for this malware infected file that was removed. Let me know if it keeps warning you.

==========

Please rerun MBAM.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware <--- Important!!
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

==========

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

==========

With your next post please provide:

* Combofix.txt
* MBAM log
* ESET log
* How is your computer running?

Kind regards,
~t

Hi thcbytes,

Things are going smoothly. Please find my combofix, MBAM, and ESET scan logs below.

However, I have a few concerns:
1. When I was running the ESET scan, an AVG Resident Shield alert popped up:

I clicked "Move To Vault"
2. Also, I now have 7 files in my AVG "Virus Vault" and 43 files in MBAM Quarantine. What should I do with these files? Is it okay to leave them in quarantine? Would it be better to permanently delete them?

Thank you for all your help and time!

Hi,

The detection is in System Restore and no threat unless you restore to an earlier date. I will instruct you how to delete the malware in System Restore next. The quarantined files are 100% harmless now!

Congratulations! You now appear clean!

**********

Please pay particularly close attention to the instructions that follow. To neglect these steps risk needless reinfection!!

Are things running okay? Do you have any more questions?

Recommendations

Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.

  1. Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.

    SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
    Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.

  2. Prevention article : To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections please read the Prevention artice by Miekiemoes.

  3. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
    I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

    Windows XP

    Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

  4. Keep your other software up to date as well. Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. Download Secunia Software Inspector to keep all your software up to date.

  5. Consider Firefox as your primary browser. Its safer, fast and secure!

  6. Install WOT. Never inadvertently surf to a dangerous website again.

  7. Consider running your browser Sandboxed with Sandboxie. You decide what actually get's into your OS!!

  8. Install NoScript. Pre-emptively blocks malicious scripts and allows JavaScript, Java and other potentially dangerous content only from sites you trust.

  9. Stay up to date!
    The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.

System Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve performance.

If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

**********

Good luck & safe surfing,
Kind Regards,
~ t

Thcbytes,

OTL went fine. My computer is working great! smile.gif Thank you so much for the help!!!!

I got a logfile for the first use of OTL, but not the second or third use.

I have one final question: Now when I reboot my computer the AVG Anti-Virus Free Icon does not appear automatically in the system tray. I have to click on the start menu and open the AVG Free Tray Icon from there. This is fine, but I want to make sure that AVG is still running with the start of my computer.

Thanks! smile.gif

Hmmm. You might uninstall/reinstall AVG.

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

AVG

Additional instructions can be found here if needed.
