My computer (an eMachine ET1161-07) running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit has 3GB of RAM with an empty slot to add another 1 GB module, which I would like to fill. A friend at work says I should't bother because my particular version of Vista only reads 3 GB. Other people say that it can read up to 5 GB. Who should I listen to?

Which version of Vista are you running? If it's 32-bit it usually will only read 3GB at most. My PC has 32-bit Vista and 4GB RAM, but Vista only identifies about 3.5GB. That's just how it is with a 32-bit OS.

If you have the 64-bit version than it can indeed run a lot more RAM than you have space for. I think if you go to Control Panel>System you can see which version of Vista
you have installed.

32 bit Windows will read up to 4 Gigs of RAM. +/- the amount of shared graphics memory. IMO. You would notice no difference by adding the additional memory.

Thanks for clearing that up. I think I'll spend the money on a new game.
