I have two computers that I want to share the same printer. I have tryed to get it set up but can't get it to work. The computer I'm needing to get set up has XP and the other one is Vista. Now at one time this did work, but I had to reload Vista on the computer and now can not figure out how to get it to work. I have sharing and printer sharing set to on in the networking and sharing window. And I even installed the printer on the XP computer. The printer is an HP photosmart C6280. And works fine with the Vista computer is is directley connected to. The XP is connected by wired router. Let me know if you need more info.
Thanks

cvos,

Let's see if I can't help you with this problem. Which computer is the printer currently connected to? Make sure both computers are on the same WORKGROUP. For example, if you right-click on "My Computer" in Windows XP and select properties, then select the Computer Name tab. You should be able to see the name of your WORKGROUP. Make sure the WORKGROUP name is the same for the other computer.

The computer names being different are fine and need to be that way.

Is the printer itself set up to share?

You have gone to the printer on the PC it is installed on, right clicked, Sharing tab, and enabled sharing? < That example is from an XP machine but I believe Vista is similar.

Have you tried to manually set up printer sharing on the XP machine? Add printer > manually > type in the computer name of Vista machine, the shared as name of printer. > \\vista PCs name\shared as printer name.

If hphotpsmartc6200 is the name showing in the Share as on the machine it is directly connected to then that should be correct. But that name seem`s to long.

What error do you get? Can not find or Can not connect?

hphotpsmartc6200 is the exact name and spelling of the printer as shown on the sharing tab of the PC it is installed on?

You need to make sure you have the drivers for XP and Vista. Make sure file and printer sharing is enable for vista. Just try searching for the computer by typing \\computername. Then you will see if the printer is being shared out properly.
