I have troj_tdss.sma and have lost wireless connection

Hello All,
I have a 2+ year old Gateway laptop with Vista OS and Trend Micro Pro Security. Recently (about a week ago), my wireless card/access quit working.
I had been having battery problems with it dying quickly and shutting down on the drive home while in sleep mode. When it did not turn on right away I chalked it up to that. When I fired it back up, the system tray/taskbar showed it was loading a driver for a new device (none was hooked to it). My wireless network would not load after that and Windows could not locate any networks afterwards.
I decided to do a Windows AutoUpdate as I was a couple of weeks behind on them. I did this and then performed a full system Trend Micro scan. It found, quaranteened, and deleted the listed threat (troj_tdss.sma).
I still have no wireless access or network detection. I have also been getting warnings that my computer does not recognize a USB device but none are connected.
BTW, I have never been able to download Vista Service Pack 1 due a code that both Microsoft and Gateway support say is probably due to system error that would require a total reboot/overhaul/whatever it is.
Please help! Also is there anything I should be worried about with this sending out my personal info?

I do not know what this does or means. Should I be worried? THANKS!
So to clarify, I think my Trend software got rid of the threat, but I still do not know how to restore my wireless connection or why my machine keeps saying it does not recognize a USB device when none is connected. Thanks, again.

Let's start with these scans:

The process of cleaning your computer may require you to temporarily disable some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free version and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Note 2:
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All

SAS, may take a long time to scan
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:

  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
Note.. SAS doesn't open the registry hives for other user accounts on the system, so scans should be done from each user account.

  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
    (This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
    (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Allright, I finally got this done and am still confused/frustrated. First off, a caveat: a friend of mine took my machine while I was waiting for a reply here on the forum. (He is a guru compared to me...he is a network administrator or something) He had run MBAM and I do not know what else, but came to the conclusion that my laptop was clean and that my issues must be hardware related. (More on that later)

After DrWebCureIt fininshed I went to reboot from safemode and clicked on the "X" again to ignore the full version. I then got the "blue screen of death" which said this:

Some google searches showed that some say the Intel thing is necessary and OK...I guess I am just paranoid. Odd that it never showed up before, and if it is malicious, why did no scans catch it?

So it appears that the virus was removed by my Trend software, but my laptop still has no wireless, a USB problem, a blue screen problem, and this Intel thing. I do not know if this is a hardware problem or not, but it seems strangely curious/coincidental that none of these problems appeared until after the virus.
Am I beyond help? Is there a way to undo the damage? I discovered all this on startup when my machine installed a driver for a device that did not exist. Thanks again!

The Intel is for your graphics chip which is possible it's the problem
Did you have a USB device plugged in when this problem happened?
For the time being, do not let your IT friend talk you into running Combofix
Try these two things first

Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.

  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
    This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.

I did not have anything connected to the machine when this happened...not even my wireless mouse. I did find something when I was looking for a BSOD log file that could explain the USB problem. I saw a folder for REALTEK USB Wireless LAN Driver (created 2/12/2010 11:59 pm). Could this be the USB problem that is not being recognized and why my wireless is not operable? If so, why did it stop and can it be fixed?

TFC showed nothing and GMER scan results said "GMER hasn't found any system modification"
When I tried to save the GMER everything basically locked up. The save window finally opened, and when I clicked in the rename field the window shaded out and froze. Nothing would work: right clicking CLOSE in the system tray, ctrl-alt-del would not even open task mgr, start-control panel froze. Had to manually shut down and restart.

GMER brought the BSOD twice and then again in Safe Mode, finally got through it when I unchecked Devices and then the above freeze-up happened.

I was looking for the logs detailing the BSOD events when I found the REALTEK folder I mentioned above. Also, when I found the Minidump files I tried to open them and was denied access. I am the administrator on this machine and am logged in as such, so why would access be denied? I don't know if the logs would be helpful, but I thought I could try to get them.

As far as I know, there has not been a Combofix done on my machine.

On a semi-related note, when my IT buddy was looking at this thing he uninstalled my Trendmicro Pro. I have one unused license left on it. Will I lose that last license if try to reinstall it on this machine? Was wanting to save it (the last license) for what seems to be the inevitable purchase of a new laptop if I can't get this thing figued out!

Thank you so much for taking some time with me...I know this has to get frustrating for you dealing with the problems of others.

Suggest a rootkit to me

I recommend you submit a DDS log

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A DDS / HJT Log". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log.


When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Removal Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the Malware Response Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

The MR team is very busy and it will take awhile to get to your post
