Search Engine Redirect Problem

Hi.
Clicking on Google search results on my XP machine redirects the browser. It started with Firefox and then affected IE7 as well. I tried fixing the problem with multiple programs: Anti-Malware Bytes, Super Anti-Spyware, Spybot, and Symantec Anti-Virus. I also tried GooredFix and XDelBox. While some of these scans found some threats, fixing them did not solve the problem. After the fixes, the first one or two search results linked successfully, but by the third or fourth, it would redirect again. I tried a second round of scans in Safemode with System Restore turned off. These had the same result. Can you help?

I've attached a HijackThis log as well the GooredFix log. (I tried to run a GMER scan last night as well, but about 40 minutes into the scan, it just went away-- and it took my entire desktop with it, leaving only the Dell screen saver background. I had to do a hard reboot.) Since I can't use the internet browsers on the infected machine (my home computer), I came into the office to send this from my work computer. It may therefore take some time between replies. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. The truth is, I'm no longer sure whether I still have the problem. The problem has been Google redirects. However, they haven't occurred consistently-- usually only every three or four times I click on a Google search result. Since my first post, I had been running various scans, but with no change in the problem. Included was one successful scan with GMER, but I didn't know how to interpret the results. Finally, over the weekend I ran ComboFix. I had thought it would just scan without fixing anything unless I told it to. However, shortly into the scan it reported that it had detected rootkit activity and asked me to reboot. After rebooting, the scan resumed. Upon finishing, it reported that it had deleted a number of files. I've since tried a few Google searches, but so far there have been no redirects. Other than simply continuing to use it, is there a way for me to know for sure whether my computer is clean? If not, should we just terminate the thread until something pops up again?

I am attaching the GMER log that I created before using ComboFix as well as the ComboFix log.
