Playback sound and video on my laptop (XP on Pavillion zv6000) stutters and freezes. Is this a virus and can I fix it myself?

Not necessarily. You have a five year old laptop that isn't supposed to be a workhorse in the first place. Depending on what else you might be running, the likely answer is you're a little short on RAM.
