Hi
I just installed linux (red hat fedora core) and it's running oddly slow

the computer isn't much (celeron 500Mgz,384M RAM,integrated video)
but it ran windows xp extremely well the last couple days

when i say slow..i mean like i can't even open windows properly

is there anything other than my machine that could be causing this?

Thats becuase youre using RedHat lmao. Anything redhat isisnt a decent distro. I recomend Gentoo Linux, you can custom install it to your specs and itll run like a dream, just follow all the directions on the site. Once you get it installed emerge wmaker

I have to disagree with systemfile, RedHat is a great distro and is the basis
for many other distros (Mandrake, SELinux <-- this is the one the NSA uses, and more)
But recommending Gentoo is IMHO not a good idea for new Linux users.
It can be rather difficult to set up.
Without knowing much about your set up its hard to pinpoint the slowness
problem you are having. It could be that you have a lot of unwanted processes
running.
At the command line you can type "top" (no quotes)
and that will show you every thing running and what programs
are using the most memory. HTH.

In ever instance I've seen RH used its been a slow troublesome.. problem. It has the whole package install thing, which could possibly give you a bunch of programs you dont even need or want. Gentoo, if you follow the instructions on the install page will be a much better distro by far, its like and cutomizable.

Okay..it was running okay for a couple days...but then after i restarted the comp in once again became extremely slow...and even being such a noob i still use google and stuff to learn about it,but since it is so slow it's hard to do anything on it..even to look for the problem(assuming there is one)

is it possible it could be my old video card?

This is extremely upsetting because i am very keen on learning the way of the tux

edit:after using the cmd 'top' i got a list(which was very hard to read because of the problem) but i gathered the 5 main processes...3 were my user name..and 2 were root..

any idea where i can find what should be running and what shouldnt?i dont like asking for so much, but at this rate i cant even learn it on my own

THANKS!
