Hello,

Thank you for any help in advance.

I turned on my computer yesterday, and I got a RUNDLL error, saying:
Error loading c:\windows\system32\nojepoke.dll
The specified module could not be found.

At first I thought it wasn't a big deal, but then I noticed I couldn't open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then a bunch of ad windows kept popping up.

I have a Dell laptop, which is running Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

The following is my DDS log. I have also attached Attach.txt and Ark.txt.

Thank you again for any help! (Also, should I attach my HijackThis log? I scanned my computer yesterday.)

Hi,

Please try this version of malwarebytes: Click the link here
Save it on your desktop. You'll see it will have a random name, and will look similar like this:
Doubleclick on it, so it will extract the files and will start Malwarebytes automatically.
In case the installer (random named file) won't run either, rename it to EXPLORER.EXE and try again.

When Malwarebytes opens, click the "Update" tab FIRST and select to check for updates in order to get the latest updates.
In case Malwarebytes doesn't open, search for the folder mbam-installer on your desktop, open it and doubleclick the file winlogon.exe which will be present in there. This should launch Malwarebytes.

Then perform a scan and let it remove what it found. Reboot afterwards (important).
After reboot, post the malwarebytes log together with a new HijackThislog.

In case you're having problems with above instructions, let me know.

Hi, miekiemoes,

Before you replied, I got Malwarebytes to open and work; I ended up running it three times b/c I was really worried. If you don't mind, I'm going to post the first time I ran it and then the third time I ran it. (I wasn't sure if you preferred for me to attach the file or just c&p, but I'm going to do the latter for now.)

Should my computer be fine now?

Hi,

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

QUOTE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"="AVGRSSTX.DLL"

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this:
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Then, Update your Sun Java, because previous versions are vulnerable:
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:
Then,

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.
  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi, miekiemoes, I followed the directions you gave.

MBAM didn't catch anything, but while I was running it, my anti-virus program (I have Avira Anti-Virus) had to block a couple of Trojans. Does that mean the infections still haven't been removed? If so, how can I remove them?

Hi,

Malwarebytes already removed the malware in your first post already.
During latest scan, when Avira popped up, it was most probably because of some leftovers in your System restore points. This is normal.

To make sure,

Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding.
Then reboot.
After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".
There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply.

I did a full scan with Avira. It still found a couple of infections; is that okay? Should I turn off System Restore and then turn it back on again (would that get rid of the leftover infections?)?

Also, here the scan report from Avira:

Yes, flushing your system restore points is always a good idea after being infected. You can easily do this by disabling system restore, reboot and then enable system restore again.

I think everything's all right now? Well, actually, the laptop got malware again and Malwarebytes got disabled again. I reinstalled Malwarebytes by renaming the .exe file and then ran it. It found the infections and said it would delete them after I rebooted. I rebooted the laptop and then ran Malwarebytes again. It found one more infection, which I think it deleted/quarantined. I turned off System Restore and then restarted the laptop. Then I turned on System Restore and ran Avira Anti-Virus, which didn't find anything more. Is it likely that my system is clean now? Do I need to run ComboFix or anything like that? Also, do you have any recommendations for protecting against malware/infections in the future (like should I install any additional programs...?)?

Thank you for your help!

Hi,

Just a small leftover here..

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

QUOTE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"="AVGRSSTX.DLL"

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this:
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

I added the file to the registry and ran MBAM, which said that no malicious items were found. I feel like my Internet is a bit laggy, but that might be just me... Is there any last thing I can do to check if there's any more malware, or is my computer pretty much clean?

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi,

Everything should be OK here though..

Most important thing is, make sure this won't happen again, so Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again! smile.gif
