You guys probalby like this,b ut I am long-winded and I will describe and post everything I can think of about my PC and problem thumbup.gif

Not exactly sure when I got this virus, but I think it was from a downloaded movie as it just started to show up after playing it. No other system changes were made. About 5 minutes into the movie VLC Player froze and the sound just kept repeating constantly. I was unable to close it, or even move my mouse cursor. I had to shut the PC down with the power button to get it to turn off.

Either this is coincidence that the WORM/Autorun.cxl has come right now at the same time my graphics card is possibly going caput, or I still have this virus to some degree. Why I say that it may be my graphics card is that the program the virus was found in has been on my computer for about 3 years and I haven't opened it in at least 12 months. It is some Adobe Photoshop I had on my computer when I got it from my brother and I have seen this complaint for that version of Photoshop in google searches (ie. this virus being present, but only from Avira users). I actually just removed this Photoshop from my computer after this (I don't use it anyways).

For more info on freezes: I have been on Firefox in Firefox "Safe Mode" for the last 45 minutes d/l all these programs and creating logs for this topic and have had no issues. I have not played any video during this time. Of course I have had the browser freeze without running any video before this.

Not sure if Avira is the culprit, or not, but now when I open many webpages the browser hangs a bit as the page loads. This never happened before I had Avira, but I can't say for sure that is when it started. It may be from the virus issue, or a bad graphics card, I have no idea. For an example I can start a TV show on hulu.com and it will run for about 15 minutes. It takes a lto longer to start than it used to, but it will run. Then I get the same freezing that I got with the movie in the VLC player that started this problem initially.

Only Avira found this WORM, and I have also run these programs with no detections at all (Avira, MWB, and Spybot are the only ones on my machine now)):

Avast
AVG
Malwarebytes
Spybot S&D

On top of all this I regularly Run:

CCleaner (1-2 times a week for cleanup and Registry errors)
Windows Disk Defrag (every 2 weeks or so)
Firefox Cache has been cleaned 5 times in the last day.
Currently I am runnng in Safe Mode for Firefox with these Add-Ons (OFF):

Adblock Plus
Linkification
Text to Image
Gamefox
Java Quickstarter
Undo Closed Tabs
Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.1
Alexa Sparky (This is always off. Only use it once in a great while to hit some websites for juice and then disable it again)
YouPlayer
I am guessing that my problem has something to do with more than just a virus and it is just a coincidence.

HERE ARE MY LOGS (Attatch.txt is Attached):

Hi Elle,

Thanks for the reply. No my problem has not been resolved. In fact it is probably worse, but I at least have the ability to describe it in more detail.

While I am not positive it isn't a hardware problem at this point, it seems that it could be something else entirely. For the most part, if I turn my computer on and don't go on the internet it will allow me to run programs for quite a while and seem to work fine. I even downloaded and had running a program called "Speed Fan" to see if it might jsut be overheating a bit. While it didn't stay on long enough for me to get a great feel for this it usually stayed in the range of 40-45 degrees celsius if the PC had been on and off for a good 2 hours. Even if the PC is off overnight and I try to start it in the morning it freezes so it can't be that.

If I do go on the internet I can browse around for a few minutes, but eventually it will freeze. It ALWAYS freezes almost immediately if I open more than one tab on any browser. Firefox, or Chrome. Chrome is a little lighter and runs a bit longer than Firefox, but not much. At this point it will let me move my mouse pointer still, but the next action I take will be the last before I am forced to do a hard shut down to get the computer to turn off.

I have run a good number of anti-malware programs as I mentioned before, with no results. Malware Bytes, Spybot, I have Spywreblaster running now along with WinPatrol (Although I shut it off to run the logs). I have run Avira and AVG virus scans with no results other than that very first time of Avira detecting WORM/Autorun.cxl

I have since completely uninstalled Firefox as well as all the profile data, and all the folders that Mozilla created including the ones in the Documents and Settings folder. Obviously this did little as it still freezes using only Chrome in the same way.

I also pulled the network adapter from this computer to be safe for the time being. So it doesn't ahve access to the internet, but I have another computer I can d/l things and transfer with a usb stick if needed.

So...Here are my updated logs (I apologize for forgetting the ark.txt attachment earlier, but attached it here.):

Hi,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is m0le and I will be helping you with your log.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already. You can subscribe by clicking the Options box to the right of your topic title and selecting Track This Topic.

  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

  • Please reply to this post so I know you are there.
The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day after that then I will close the topic.

----------------------------------------------

The ark scan showed some interesting results.

Please run Combofix for me

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks smile.gif

Thanks for the quick reply. I will stick by now since you are here and try to stay here until we figure something out thumbup.gif

Running Comfix.exe now. Windows Recovery Console has been installed so it should be a few more minutes.

I'm posting on another computer while I run this stuff, but they are no more than 10 feet away from each other if you need me to switch to the problem PC.

Sorry, missed you ripvanwallace.

Combofix has replaced the MBR and removed the TDSS process so that should have made a big difference to the PC.

Let's clear out the temp files

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If you are using Firefox and this has caused page loading problems then please clear your private data. To do this go
to the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, and then check Cache. Click Clear Private Data Now.

This could also be Clear Recent History or similar

Then close Firefox and then reopen it.

Please now run MBAM

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Thanks thumbup2.gif

Will do this right now. One thing when I turned this computer on just now this popped up:

Not sure if this is important, but I wonder what it is?

It looks like WinPatrol letting you know a hidden file is running. If you knowingly have WinPatrol already you can stop these messages by looking under
WinPatrol's Options tab and clicking the "Hide Alert Messages" button.

If you don't have WinPatrol then it may be adware. In which case MBAM will remove it for you.

Well...looks like Mallwarebytes froze 15 minutes into the scan. sad.gif

IT won't start back up and I can open Task Manager, but I can't click on anything.

So...I guess I have to shut it down and start over? Safe mode?

EDIT: I rebooted and am running MWB again. I knew it would take about an hour to run a full scan so I was doing some work while I waited on another PC, but I'll watch it this time to make sure it runs past that point.

EDIT: PAst that point this time so we'll see how it goes.

Well...the scan is done and it said it found 0 malicious items. To do a bit of testing where I had problems before I opened up Chrome and opened a few tabs to see if it would freeze. Seemed fine. Was able to go on Hulu and start up a video and it ran fine. For the ultimate test I opened up 3 Youtube vids to run at the same time and it seems to be fine there as well.

So...at this point it looks like you have figured it out clapping.gif Thanks for all the help I really appreciate it. If there is anything more you can suggest, or want me to do jsut let me know.

Here is the MWB Log:

Spoke too soon. Downloaded Firefox. As I was putting in bookmarks I opened up Chrome to find some of my passwords. This is probably 30-45 minutes after safely browsing, going to many sites, downloading Firefox, etc. The only change I made at all to Firefox was download a theme, restart it, and start adding in bookmarks. I only got 1 in actually. Then it froze. I don't have any add-ons on it other than what came with it.

My computer seems to be running the hard drive constantly. At least I mean it seems to be "working" constantly like it is scanning something. The Task manager doesn't show anything running, but I can hear the hard drive working it's butt off. I don't think this is Avira either.

I uninstalled WinPAtrol earlier so that isn't running either.

Anything else you suggest here? PC runs a "little" bit better,b ut the problem persists. When on the internet the PC will eventually freeze. I can do some things I couldn't before like open new tabs, play video, etc., but eventually yhe browser will freeze and I ahve to force a shut down.

There is a file that is on my desktop called "settings" that shows up and I have no idea what it is from. I assume it came from one of these programs as a back up?

I ran Combo Fix again and have that log. The logs above are the same time and I haven't done anything to that computer since I ran the logs. Also I include an Avira Scan log here as well. It says there are 2 "Warnings" where some Windows files couldn't be opened.
