Hi,
We've run Combofix, Malwarebytes, (safe mode and regular mode) and Avast. (Had to rename the tools as would not initially run due to infestation). Client had paid for Antivirus Live before bringing computer to us. Although combofix and Malwarebytes do not report any errors anymore, we cannot get rid of the line that says Antivirus Live is active. Thanks for your help. Below is the dds log:

Hi,

You are an IT professional?

First: I see you have used ComboFix before you came to us. I want to inform you that the execution of ComboFix, without supervision from a trained helper, can have very harmful effects on your computer.
ComboFix is a powerful tool, that can, without supervision from one of us, make your system (partly) corrupt. So I advise you to don't use this tool, and our other tools, in the future anymore without supervision.

1. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

2. Also please post a new DDS logfile. smile.gif

Thank you for your reply, Black_bird. Yes I am an IT Professional since the late 1980's. Usually, I don't run ComboFix unless all else fails as I know what it can do to a system. Per your instructions, I post the Malwarebytes log and DDS.txt results below. I've also attached the attach2.zip file.

Hi,

Please tell me what files are present in C:\Comfy smile.gif
Also do this please:

1. Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

2. Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.
If you need a tutorial, see here

Hi,
Comfy is a folder that Combofix created when we ran it under a different name. We could not initially run any scans with the default name. The files are:
CF14825.cfxxe, mbr.cfxxe, and mbr.txt. The contents of mbr.txt are below. I ran GMER in safe mode. I also ran the Kaspersky scan in regular mode.

Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal detector 0.3.7 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net

Hi,

Download ComboFix from here

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply, together with a new Hijackthislog.

Hello,
I ran Combofix and HiJackThis per your instructions. Combofix alerted me to turn off Antivirus Live scanning, but I could not as I don't know where it is coming from. I truly appreciate your time.

Black_Bird,
I believe I found the fix as to why ComboFix and other programs were seeing Antivirus Live active. Whenever I turned off AVAST, Windows Security Center would pop up stating the it detected multiple Antivirus products installed that were either outdated or disabled. I ran a search and found many posts with the fix below, which I performed. I will be happy to run any other scans you think are necessary, but I think we finally got the last remnant. Thank you very much for you assistance and I hope this helps others that are as stumped as I was by that pesky message even though all scans were coming out clean.

Fix:
This problem is likely caused by corruption to the database in the C:\Windows\System32\Wbem\Repository folder. This area is used by the Windows operating system to manage the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service. In turn, the WMI service is used by Windows to obtain and correctly display information related to the Windows Security Center.

To ensure that accurate information regarding your antivirus protection is displayed in the Windows Security Center, please follow the steps below:

Click Start → Run. The Run window will be displayed. Type services.msc and click OK.

The Services window will appear. Locate the Windows Management Instrumentation service.

Right-click the service and click Stop (See Fig. 1-2 below). Close the Services window.

Using Windows Explorer, delete all files in the C:\Windows\System32\Wbem\Repository directory.

Restart the computer. The WMI service will launch, all files in the folder C:\Windows\System32\Wbem\Repository will be restored, and the information in the Windows Security Center will be updated.

I will be happy to run any other scans you think are necessary, but I think we finally got the last remnant.

Hi,

1.

1. Click on the Start menu.
2. Select Run...
3. Type wbemtest and click OK
4. Connect to root\SecurityCenter
5. Click on Query
6. Type in or copy/paste SELECT * FROM Antivirus Live and click on Apply

If there is more than one result, it means there is more than one Antivirus program installed. Double click on each result to view the properties for that Antivirus product. Identify the product(s) installed and DELETE any records for an Antivirus software that is no longer installed.

2. Click Start>Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A report should pop open for you. Please post the contents in your next reply.

What problems do you still have?

Black_Bird,
When I ran the query, I got the following message:
Error Number 0x80041017. Facility: WMI. Description: Invalid Query.
Will continue with other instructions and post reply ASAP.

Black_Bird,
I am not having any problems any longer, but performed the actions you requested.
