Running XP Professional.

I have a 100mbps card in my PC.

Would getting a 1000mbps card (Gigabyte) card make any difference to my download speeds? (Broadband speed of up to 8mbps)

Am I right in thinking, it would only make a difference to network speeds right? (As long as I am plugged into a gigabyte switch)

You're right, you wouldn't notice any difference to your broadband download speed, the LAN speed is already so much higher than what the broadband can do.
