Hi,

I was infected with a virus yesterday and I can't seem to get rid of it. My antivirus (that runs on startup) id's it as Vundo, and specifies the filename of fenoyoyu.dll in c:\windows\system32\. When I choose the option to reboot, it still finds the problem again.

I am not able to run Malwarebytes (it destroyed it and stops it from processing when I try to reload it). Adaware and Spybot do nothing. I downloaded and ran Vundofix - no help.

I read entries in this forum and see that the solution may be to run combofix - but then read that one of you folks should look at a hijack output first. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I have XP home addition 2002 sp3. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS or GMER log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Also, please subscribe to this topic, so you are notified when someone replies. Please continue to check manually on occasion, as every now and then the email may be caught by your spam filter.

Hello,

Thanks for your help. I pretty much left the system alone until I heard back from you, so it still acts as described above. When I boot, I receive a RUNDLL msg saying "error loading c:\windows\system32\telowewa.dll, the specified module could not be found". Also, after quickscan processes on startup, I receive a message that it found trojan.vundo and calls out meridewa.dll as infected. It says it is partially removed and a reboot is needed, but when I reboot I receive the same message.

Here are the logs you requested. DDS ran fine. GMER hung twice while I was booted in normal mode, so I booted in safe mode and tried it. The first time the system crashed (blue screen with an error message that flashed before it rebooted) after about an hour into it. The second time it processed to completion.

The DDS directions sad to zip the attach file (which I did), but was not able to successfully upload it, so I uploaded the text file. Hope this was OK.

Again, thanks for you help, and let me know what you think...

Hi,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is m0le and I will be helping you with your log.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already. You can subscribe by clicking the Options box to the right of your topic title and selecting Track This Topic.

  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

  • Please reply to this post so I know you are there.
The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day after that then I will close the topic.

----------------------------------------------

You have a fair amount of Vundo there. Gmer may have faltered but it hasn't found a rootkit on the PC so let's proceed with Combofix to remove as much Vundo as we can.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi,

I downloaded combofix and it installed the recovery console successfully. It began and ran through 50 stages, then listed all the files it deleted. This took about 45 to 50 minutes. It then performed a re-boot and then a message appeared that said it is preparing log report and to not run any programs until finished. Unfortunately, spybot resident and symatec av started again because of the re-boot - hope this didn't hurt anything. Total process took about 1.5hrs.

Here's the file - thanks...

We need to rerun Combofix as below.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
File::
c:\windows\system32\tosilihu.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{e3b0ceca-6190-4fca-9190-c30052975797}]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Then please run MBAM

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Okay, the Combofix log is missing a lot of content. It has cut off about three quarters of the log.

MBAM does show that Combofix isn't getting everything but there has been a great drop in the amount of infection

When you return, don't worry about finding the log just please run this script and let's see what is left.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Albert\Local Settings\Application Data\yrkstv

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Hi - I'm back early..... I looked at the last combofix output and it was only as long as what I posted. There must have been a glitch. Re-ran it with your new CFScript and the output is below - thanks.

I'm going to replace one of the drivers with a copy. It may have been modified and although Combofix usually picks up on that it hasn't.

Please rerun Combofix as below.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
FCopy::
c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\atapi.sys | c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Then please run ESET, it's an online scanner

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Hello,

I ran Combofix with the information that was provided and before it completed, a blue screen appeared stating that a problem had been detected and Windows shut down. The reason displayed was "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". It also displayed a hex msg (not sure if this means anything, but will list it) *** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x0100E017, 0x0000001C, 0x00000000, 0x804E5DF1). I was then directed to restart. Everthing seemed to come up normal (except a msg that Windows recovered from a error). Unfortunately there wasn't any log from the Combofix run, and the CFScript file was gone. I decided to perform the ESET scan without re-running the Combofix program (hope this was OK).

Here is the ESET file - thanks.

Can you please run Combofix again, without the script, so I can see what may have happened on the last run.

Thanks thumbup2.gif

Combofix looks good.

Let's run ESET, an online scan, and then post a new DDS log.

  13. Push
Nearly there, papab thumbup2.gif
