Posted 25 January 2010 - 11:40 AM

I was an unfortunate victim of the trojan that automatically downloads & installs Internet Security 2010. I have AVG installed on my primary (Vista x64) partition, which is the one that was infected.

As many of you probably know, this trojan/virus disables task manager & proceeds to install a program called "Internet Security 2010"

I managed to install Malwarebytes Anti Malware by using my XP partition to clean up a lot of the threat before going back into my vista partition. I found & deleted the registry entries related to this breach (after using Anti Malware to clean up a lot of the mess)

I then checked out my startup list with msconfig & disabled the winlogon32.exe (which was one of the things this particular infection placed in my syswow64 folder, as well as 41.exe, helper32.dll, smss32.exe)

I've run spybot S&D, and scanned my windows & program files folders (among other things) with the most current definitions of symantec corporate (on my xp partition), but it did not detect most of the files the threat generated (like 41.exe, helper32.dll, smss32.exe, winlogon32.exe). While I was in my xp partition, I temporarily cut & pasted those entities into a new folder outside of windows). Manually scanning these files does not show an infection, but I know this infection generated these files

Other users/topics that seem similar to mine I found at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/290118/internet-security-2010constantly-finding-trojans/ and http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/288001/smss32exe-was-scanned-removedreturned/

As I mentioned, although I believe I've removed most of the threat, I'm still unable to access the internet.

I downloaded root repeal onto my flash drive to install on my vista x64 desktop partition, but it said that it cannot be run on a 64 bit OS. For this reason, I am unable to post a RootRepeal log.

My DDS log is below:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
regards,
schrauber
