a friend of mine running 2000 reports....

Well, I've downloaded and run:

Ccleaner
Malwarebytes
Superantispyware

Windowsdefender does not work on the 2000 operating system.

The computer boot-up is now as follows:

Turn computer on - it follows normal sequence until the wallpaper
is brought up and the start-up tune plays; it goes no further.
Hit crtl-alt-delete to bring up task manager. Click on new task.
Click on browse. Go to windows directory and click on explorer.
This brings up the icons and the machine will continue the boot-up
sequence.

Even though the programs were run and there no problems found,
IE windows keep opening up.

this sounds like something I ran into last year. I was told I had been hijacked and the only real solution was a format and reinstall. should I advise him to do the same?
