Looking through my ARP list I see that I have a bunch of .Net Runtime entries from v1 to the latest v3.5 SP1. Reading about them at the MSN download center, it says that the v3.5 SP1 package has updates etc from all previous versions. Can I safely uninstall all versions except v3.5 SP1 or would that be a mistake.

The reason I ask is that once a week or so I get a .Net Runtime, Evid 1023 error in my event viewer logs. I googled it but although there is lots of hits, none of them are actually a fix. So I thought about downloading new copies from MSN then uninstalling and reinstalling them again, but am not sure if I need all of them or just the latest?.

Assuming, you're talking about .NET Framework, different programs will ask for different .NET versions, so there are on your computer for a reason.

Yes I do mean the .NET Framework versions. The following text is copied from MSN. If we still need previous versions why does this latest version appear to have the updates from previous versions as a part of it?.

.NET Framework 3.5
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0, and includes .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.0 service pack 1.

Once again, some program will want to use .NET 2.0, for instance and it won't accept .NET 3.0, because it simply won't recognize it.

But...any program that requires a particular version of MS.NET which is not installed...will prompt for the specific version, which can then be downloaded/installed.
