I have a virus or multiple viruses.
It gives me what I believe are fake alerts and guides me to buy malware defense. From what I read this is a scam.
Some that pop up are Email-Worm.Win32.NetSky.g and Backdoor.Win32.Kbot.al

I was able to find the solution on this site requiring a download of software, however I can not get to this site or anyplace to download the fix-it software (sorry, I don't remember the name) on the infected pc. I keep getting redirected to malware defense OR it says I have the wrong path. I have tried Mozilla and Google. When I tried IE, it froze up and I had to reboot. I am now on a different pc and I can get here, but I need the download to work on the infected PC.

How can I get rid of the virus on my other pc if I am not able to get to the download site?

Thanks.

Welcome to BC
Which tools are you trying to download?

Open Task Manager and in the Applications window, end all tasks
Start a new task and type explorer.exe
See if you can now access the sites

You can also burn the tools to a CD or use a thumb drive if you have another computer available

Once you can do that, try mbam

The process of cleaning your computer may require you to temporarily disable some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free version and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.

alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Note 2:
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs
---------------------------
Be sure to re-enable your AV and malware scan tools if they were disabled

Thank you.
I was able to download to a flash drive, rename it and load it onto the infected pc desktop.
I tried to run it several times and I get to where it says "extracting files" and it gets stuck; just freezes.
I then tried to run it saving it to a different path. I got to where it says "finishing" and it gets stuck.

I will keep trying. any further advice will be welcomed.

Thank you.

UPDATE:
The download I was originally referring to was the mbam.exe to clean the virus.

I did get it onto my infected PC with the use of a flash drive.
After many tries, I got it to finish (I think). The icon is on my desktop, however it won't work. It won't run or scan.

I'm wondering if my system is too far gone. I'm trying to save some items to the flash drive and then will keep trying.

Let me know if there is anything else to try.
Thanks.

Try running this application before running mbam
It may take several times

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Do not reboot the computer or you will have to run it again

The black box stays open. It is "running" according to the task manager. It's been 5 minutes. I'll keep waiting and see what happens.
Thanks.

Each on that I try leaves the black box open and then freezes. I try to view the task manager to see if it is running and I can not open it. Can't do anything.
Also I notice one more pop up that comes now. It is Rootkit.Win32.Agent.pp.

THANK YOU!
Finally the rkill worked.
Then I ran the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and that seemed to work.
I was still getting the fake alarms and popups.
I ran the scan again and 9 more rootkit virus were found.
I'm still getting the fake popups, so what next?

You asked me to post the logs from these scans, but I can not see how to attach them. I hope it's okay to post them as text here.

VIRUS is STILL THERE.

I ran mbam.exe many times and got additional items to remove.
One of the last times it found some that were set to be removed upon reboot.
I rebooted.
The virus is still there.
The mbab software finds zero files to remove.

This is beginning to feel hopeless. Any other ideas?

Also, i can not use the search for files feature to try to locate this "malware defender". When I try to search I get no options.

Not good news I'm afraid

I recommend that you post a DDS / HJT scan log

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log.

You will also be instructed to create a Root Repeal Log

When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

The HJT team is very busy and it will take awhile to get to your post
Please be patient and good luck
