I have run Combofix several times to remove various Malware cases on Windows XP Pro SP2 systems. On 20-01-2010 and 21-01-2010 I downloaded fresh Combofix's and on the first day it went well up to the point of "ComboFix is scanning the computer for infections" (see screen dump in http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/h...o-use-combofix). This screen appeared and normally I expect to see the program progressing through various stages, but I even left the computer running overnight without any progress. The next day I downloaded a new version, hoping it would be resolved, however this was not the case. For the past 60 minutes I have the same result. I will let the computer run overnight once more, but I don't think it will show signs of improvement.

Anyone experiencing something similar or has a suggestion that I can try in order for Combofix to start going through the stages?

Thanks,

Norbert

Louis,

Thanks for the reply. I did read about Combofix, including the link you provided, before using it some time ago. I am aware of the dangers and will take responsibility if the system needs a full reinstall. This is what will happen anyway if I can't get Combofix to beyond the scanning phase.

Regards,

Norbert

Some malware can stop Combofix from running. I suggest you post in the Am I Infected forum and let them take you over some steps to see if that can be established.

In the meantime, uninstall Combofix.

Depending on how badly your system is infected, ComboFix may take longer to complete its routine than it normally does. However, there are circumstances ComboFix will hang or stall at various stages due to malware interference, failure to disable any other real-time protection tools and CD Emulators (Daemon Tools, Alchohol 120%, Astroburn, AnyDVD) so that it does not complete successfully. While that is not normal behaviour, it is not unusual. In such cases, it is helpful to know at what stage CF stalled.

I suggest you follow m0le's advice.
