OK... This is driving my husband and I crazy. In fact, he has threatened to throw this computer out into the yard if we can't get this fixed soon. I don't think he's kidding. So far I have been able to talk him into giving it one more chance, but I don't know how much longer I can hold him off....

Sometimes the computer runs great. We can be online for hours with no interruptions. But a lot of the time, when we try to get online, it will redirect us to a page. All it says is 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'. There is also a 'Diagnose Connections Problem' button, but it doesn't help. I have tried cleaning out the computer... removed programs we don't use any more, deleting cookies, that kind of stuff, but it's still doing it. I had to fight with it for 15 minutes before I could even get on to post this. Usually if I keep trying it will eventually give up and let me get online, but I'm tired of the fight. If this doesn't clear up soon, I think I'm gonna side with my hubby....

PLEASE HELP!

With it being such erratic in it`s behavior, and you really do`t mention any other problems, I would connect your ISP. This could me a line or modem issue. The ISP normally takes responsibility for the modem. The phone company for the lines form the box out side your home and beyond. If you are on cable it is pretty much the same.

My husband works for the cable company as a tech. He installs cable/internet everyday. He doesn't think it's the lines. Sometimes when this happens, I will have one page open, and it will work fine. At the same time I will open another page, and it won't let me go anywhere. Like it's being picky about what I do. Just like now... I have this window open. I have another one open trying to go to different sites. It will let me SEARCH for anything.... I type 'facebook' into the search box, it brings the results, but when I press the link for Facebook, it doesn't open it. Just shows me the screen I mentioned before. I can go back, search for 'dog'. It will bring me results for dog, like American Kennel Club, but the links are useless. Finally after several tries, it will eventually open a link. It used to redirect me to another page, but I haven't seen that one in a few days. I don't know if my cleaning helped stop it or what, but the only thing I can remember about it was "redir" was in the address line... oh and a few months ago I had a problem with pop ups. I would get warnings like these...

"System Warning!
Intercepting programs that may compromise your privacy and harm your system have been detected on your PC. It's highly recomended you scan your PC right now."

"New data base update is avaliable!
Timely update anti-virus databases helps you find and destroy a new viruses. Otherwise, you expose yourself to risks."

Another pop-up said it was a free trial of Advanced Virus Remover.

I posted my problem to another pc help forum. They told me to scan it with SUPERAntispyware and Malwarebytes. It seemed to help. They wanted me to post the logs from the scans, but they never got back with me. I know they are busy, but that was in November, and my pc is still acting up. Not sure if it's related to that, or if this is something totally different, but I know somethings up.

Now that we know a bit more of the story I`m going to recommend that your topic be moved. While you may not be actively infected any longer you are still displaying the symptoms. Lets get you a clean bill off health and go from there.

:trumpet:
The process of cleaning your computer may require you to temporarily disable some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free version and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop.

alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Note 2:
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs
---------------------------
Be sure to re-enable your AV and malware scan tools if they were disabled

=======================

:flowers:
Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
=============================

SAS, may take a long time to scan
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
    First
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
Note.. SAS doesn't open the registry hives for other user accounts on the system, so scans should be done from each user account.

Your Malwarebytes is way out of date
Please use my download link and download version 1.44
Update it and run a FULL scan

OK... I ran TFC and did a full scan with the new version of Malwarebytes. Here is the log... You only need me to scan the computer from my user account, right? Or do I need to do this to every account on the computer like I did with SAS...?

You only need me to scan the computer from my user account, right?

That was just for SAS

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\clkxlcz.sys (Rootkit.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Users\Randy\AppData\Roaming\avdrn.dat (Malware.Trace) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Users\Randy\AppData\Roaming\fvgqad.dat (Malware.Trace) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Even though it said they were deleted successfully, it is highly doubtful
I recommend that you post a DDS / HJT log

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next. In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log.

You will also be instructed to create a Root Repeal Log

When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

The HJT team is very busy and it will take awhile to get to your post
Please be patient and good luck

why won't my laptop work?

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around
Do not send me PMs with problems that should be posted in the forums. Keep it in the forums, so everyone benefits
