Hello Out There i have an XP Home Machine that was riddled with viruses and spyware it would boot up normally. After i ran Avast Virus Scan the machine boots up to the desktop and i can use the mouse. No icons pop up and i can't get in to the task manager the same thing happens while in Safe Mode.

Ya me too got the same problem, been tring to fix for a week now.

what site did you get avast from? it may be a phony copy.

do you have the re-boot disk? if you do then you can re-install windows XP and perhaps thatll clear the problem. if a virus infects system 32 (or 64) then your antivirus might delete them by accident.

I got Avast from Filehippo.com i have some quesitons. What file is responsible for the deskttop icons showing up? Is there a way i can copy that file from a working machine and copy to the faulty one?

Hello are you getting an error message with task Manager? If so which.
Do you have an install CD?

Update i ran a repair install and i get the same issue but now i can pull up the task manger and open up a new task by typing explorer.exe. I have do that everytime i want the icons up. any ideas?

check this out:Right-click the desktop.
Point to Arrange Icons By.
Click Show Desktop Icons.
let us know if it helps you.
