My son downloaded a movie the other night from a bit torrent site. Since that time, all browsers are being redirected to ads hosted by predominantly by Primawega. System is a Dell Dimension 8300, 3.2ghz P4, 1.5GB RAM, WinXP Home SP3. Browsers are IE8 (just upgraded from 7 after this happened), Firefox 3.5.7 (latest rev), and Safari 4.0.4, the only browser that is still usable on this system. IE8 tries to load MSN.com home page with no success. Firefox loads, but dies after a search. Issues were most prevalent when doing a Google search. Any link redirected to the ad pages. Now, however, the browsers won't really even successfully load.

I have run SpyBot S&D (regular and safe mode), AdAware, & MalwareBytes (regular and safe). Virus software is AVG 8.5 free version. On the first runs of the cleaning programs, I found various malware programs, viruses, and trojan horses that had not been there previously, somewhere on the order of 45-50 different files and entries. I should still have the log files if you need to see them. Malware, SpyBot, and AdAware all fixed the issues that were found. However, the problem of browser redirection remains.

Per the instructions, I've enclosed the contents of the DDS log and have attached ATTACH.TXT and the RootRepeal log ARK.TXT. I'm looking forward to next steps --- my wife misses her computer!!!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
[We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    netsvcs
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles

    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys

    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thanks for the reply Myrti! Looks like I'm not the only one getting hit by this bug.

Just to recap, I ran Ad-Aware, SpyBot R&D, and MalwareBytes previously, and killed a large number of trojan horses and viruses. In addition, since this infection, AVG free 8.5 has isolated several variants of BackDoor.Generic12 trojan, including 3G9R34a.sys , apparently loaded from OTL (AVG alerted me to this "infection", but I took no action). Not sure if these are false positives, but the AVG Resident Shield log is full of a wide range of bugs, including Virtumonde, SHeur, and "EvenMoreMegaAdsForYou". At any rate, Internet Explorer 8 won't even load a webpage, Firefox exits with a fatal error after a few clicks, and Outlook looks when opening an email or trying to reply. It started as random popups, then alerts about being infected (and instructions to download a cleaning tool), then redirecting every Google search to an ad page, then to the state I'm in now.

I ran OTL with your instructions, and here's what resulted.

Hi,

please run a scan with gmer as well:

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Hi,

no, C should be fine. But you have very little space left on your c-drive:

Windows usually needs at least 15% of the systempartition to be free, to function without problems.
You currently only have about 0.4%

In order to free up some space you could do the following:
  • uninstall all unneeded programs.
As an example you do not need several anti spyware programs. One should be enough. smile.gif
  • clean out all your temporary files
eg with ATF cleaner from Atribune
  • Finally another way of gaining some disk space is to turn of the indexing service.[list]
  • Go to Start, My Computer Right-click on the hard-drive letter for the system, (usually C: )
  • Uncheck the box labeled "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching"
  • If it asks whether to apply to all files and folders, answer Yes.
You may have to wait while it resets the file attributes

OK, I freed up about 33GB on my 159GB drive, so I tried again. Unfortunately, I was reinfected by the AntiVirus XP2010 trojan, and all hell was breaking loose! I couldn't run the scan, as it kept locking up, so I'm trying again in safe mode. If it works, I'll reboot and send the logs. I'm writing this from another system.

Well, it died when scanning NTOSKRNL.EXE in safe mode - dropped out to blue screen. What else can I try?

Hi,

please run the following tools instead then:

MBR:
Please download mbr.exe and save it to your root directory, usually C:\ <- (Important!).
  • Go to Start > Run and type: cmd.exe
  • press Ok.
  • At the command prompt type: c:\mbr.exe -t >"C:\mbr.log"
  • press Enter.
  • A "DOS" box will open and quickly disappear. That is normal.
  • A log file named mbr.log will be created and saved to the root of the system drive (usually C:\).
  • Copy and paste the results of the mbr.log in your next reply.
ROOTREPEAL:
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract the contents of RootRepeal.zip, to your desktop.
  • Double click on your desktop.
  • Click on the report tab, then click scan
  • Check all seven boxes:
    Drivers
    Files
    Processes
    SSDT
    Stealth Objects
    Hidden Services
    Shadow SSDT
  • Click Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, Click the Save Report button. Save the log as RootRepeal.txt and post it in your next reply.

OK, downloaded MBR onto a USB key and loaded it into the root drive c:\. Had to run the command line from the "run" window to get it to write to the log file. Tried first from safe mode command prompt, but got nothing. Then entered "cmd" within Windows and ran the command you listed from a c:\ prompt. Still nothing in the log. Finally got a log file when I put the command into "run". Anyway, here it is:

Stealth MBR rootkit/Mebroot/Sinowal detector 0.3.7 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net

device: opened successfully
user: MBR read successfully
called modules: ntoskrnl.exe CLASSPNP.SYS disk.sys >>UNKNOWN [0x8A2965C0]<<
kernel: MBR read successfully
user & kernel MBR OK

I already had downloaded RootRepeal when I sent in my first request, so I ran it again. I've attached the rootrepeal.txt log that was created by the "Save Report" button for your review. Let me know if you want any of the other reports on processes, SSDT, etc.

By the way, I've left the infected system disconnected from the internet. Seems since AVG has been disabled (I actually uninstalled version 8.5), an app called "av.exe" has loaded itself (seen in task manager processes) and continually pops up what appears to be a Windows Security screen, then an apparent virus scanner called XP Antispyware 2010 pops up and "scans" my system telling me I'm infected. Now there's a 4 color shield (like the MS security icon) in my tray that keeps popping up balloons saying I'm infected, and trying to get me to "click here" to perform an anti-spyware scan. I killed the av.exe process in task manager, and that stopped the incessant scanner from running, but I've still got the system tray annoyance.

And now, as I was trying to save the individual reports from each tab, the system blue screened!

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Hi, Myrti! Thanks again for looking at the logs. Given that my wife uses this computer to pay bills and keep the checkbook, I think it might be best to reformat and reinstall. Truth be told, it's accumulated a lot of junk over the years! My biggest concern is making sure that all her data is clean and uninfected once I reinstall. Any suggestions? Should I just use the 750GB USB drive I have attached as a storage locker? And do you recommend a backup utility to make it more automated?

Once I reinstall, I'm going to install ThreatFire as a firewall, but was wondering what you would recommend as solid protection from virus, malware, and spyware attacks. Do you have favorites? I'm not averse to buying a product, so long as it's complete and doesn't bog down the system with background processing!

Thanks again for the help!

Well, some degree of success! I ran ComboFix, just so I could clear off the backdoor and AV.EXE enough to get a clean backup of my files and run the Belarc Advisor so I could get a good chart of my apps. ComboFix worked like a champ! I've included the log file for you to look over, but it looks like I'm clean --- for the time being! I'm still going to format my c:\ drive and reload XP, but I feel safer and a lot "cleaner" than before. I loaded ThreatFire for a firewall, then SuperAntiSpyware to block malware. I tried loading AVG 9.0, but ran into a problem with a registry setting, so it didn't install. As soon as my backup completes, I'm going to wipe the system clean and start over fresh. Again, if you have any suggestions for better security products, I'd love to hear them.

Here's the ComboFix log:

Hi,

ComboFix took out quite some infections, but there is a lot left, would you like to clean it up before recovering your data, or are you fine with the PC as it is now?

You can back up all your important documents, personal data files, photos to a CD or DVD drive, not a flash drive or external hard drive as they may become compromised in the process. (If you wish to use an external hard drive, let me know and I'll give you some additional tools to reduce the risks of carrying infections with your flash drive). The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, and .html) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executable files inside them as some types of malware can penetrate and infect .exe files within compressed files too. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by adding and hiding its extension to the existing extension of file(s) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. After reformatting, scan the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive.

Finally these are a couple of advices I like to give to help keeping the PC clean. Threatfire and AVG sounds good for firewall and anti virus program:
  1. Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  2. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  3. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  4. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
