http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I just installed it without any problem.
It uninstalls ver. 4.8 automatically.
I really like new interface. It much easier to navigate than the old one.

The fact it uses such little memory has been the most impressive thing I've observed thus far. The GUI is a vast (no pun intended) improvement and crucially, I trust avast to keep me out of trouble as it has done for several years now.

It looks like scanning big files is WAY faster, than with 4.8
I wonder, if the same will apply to scanning a whole computer. I may give it a shot later...

That's the first thing I did after installing. Can't remember the exact time taken but I do know it was a LOT faster than 4.8.

Grabbed it last night. Did my usual custom install since I do not P2P, use IM, and have a text only email client on this machine. Only two scanners running. Very lite on resources, much improved GUI. We have a winner. IMO

It looks as though you don't have to register the product for a year like before

Am I wrong?

Did you install it for the first time?
I'm asking, because I've been using ver. 4.8, so I assumed, the license went automatically from 4.8 to 5.0.

The initial install is good for 30 days. A nice new feature is the option to register online from within the GUI. No more waiting for a key through email. Once registered it is good for a year.

I love it...sometimes I would use avira just so I wouldn't have to keep on registering

and I love the way it scans...so far looks like a big improvement!

Nice interface - easy to configure.

Not that much quicker than 4.8, IMO, but no matter.

On default settings:
Avast 'Quick' Scan - Ver 5
15mins 42 secs
29903 files
9.36GB

Have used versions of this program for some years; it is excellent.

Paying McAfee 20+ every year seemed pointless,
when most magazine reviews concluded that free
programs like Avast, AVG etc. did a much better job.

I registered previously on 1st Feb 2009 and it states that my registration
expires 1st April, 2010, so yes, Broni, it carries over.

It was always a 14 month period - just have to re-register, free, at that point.

The fact I did a fresh install as opposed to allowing the new version to do it probably explains why I had to re-register.

I had avira antivirus on my computer, just installed Avast. I'm excited about this new version and want to use it more than before.

Most likely, ThunderZ

Installation painless, replaced 4.8, but I did have to do a second reboot
before the scan page operated correctly.

Quite entertaining to be informed today by voiceover, that the definitions had been updated!

From the Avast site:

"Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0 can now continue to be used for 12 months
and you will continue to receive automatic updates to both the program and your virus definitions.
At the end of that time, it will be necessary simply to register for a new free license".

I have been using it in the beta stage for about a month, it updated 2 days ago or so and I didn't even notice but the "beta" in the GUI was gone :D
