Hi, the programs "winuser.exe" and "revz.exe" sometimes hog up my resources, bringing the cpu usage to around 50%. It creates frame lag even though the only program I have on is msn. Here is my log. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

You have a firewall installed, but I don't see an antivirus.
Also, Any reason why your windows isn't up to date? You don't have even ServicePack1 installed! Remember that your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary security patches/updates, so malware can get installed automatically while surfing without any problems.
Because your system is already infected, updating to SP2 now CAN cause problems, so let's get you updated when everything is fixed again.

So I strongly suggest you update first to SP1 (service pack 1).. later when everything is done, we can update to SP2.
Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to update.

Reboot afterwards.

Then, install an antivirus!
AVG, Bitdefender OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decreases the reliability of it seriously!

Reboot.

Update your antivirus and let it perform a full scan and delete everything it is finding.

When done, Create a folder on your desktop called Sysclean.
Go to http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp and download sysclean package to the folder you made.
Go to http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp and download the Official Pattern Release for windows to your desktop.
This file will be called lptXXX.zip (XXX represents the version number)
Unzip lptXXX.zip and you'll get the file lpt$vpn.XXX.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Move the lpt$vpn.XXX to that Sysclean-folder you created on your desktop.

Turn off your antivirus which is installed on your system because it can interfere with the Sysclean-scan.

Open the sysclean-folder and doubleclick sysclean.com.
Check: Automatically clean or delete detected files.
Click scan.
When the scan is finished, open your sysclean-folder and copy and paste the contents of sysclean.log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

thanks a lot for your reply, miekiemoes

I have installed SP1, but I have not installed SP2 yet, since I heard from other people that SP2 causes a lot of errors, how true is that?

I downloaded the AVG virus scan and followed your instructions.

Here is my sysclean log:

Hello,

Well I think your antivirus already did the job.... Now just some leftovers.

Hijackthis is still in your temp-folder, so I strongly advise to create a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted.
How do you make a permanent folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files.
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Local Security Authority Service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\lssas.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Update] revz.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update Loaders 2006] winuser.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Update] revz.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update Loaders 2006] winuser.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Update] revz.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot and post back a fresh HijackThis log and I'll take another look.

About SP2, the reason why most people are having problems with it after installing it, is mostly because their system was infected while updating. That's why updating to SP2 when infected is a risk and you need to be clean first.

SP2 is much safer than SP1. If you had SP2, you wouldn't get infected with this anyway. That's why SP2 is so important. :flowers:

Hello,

I see a clean hijackthislog.
How are things running now?

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates, so visit ASAP http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to update to SP2.

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
