Posted 18 January 2010 - 08:04 PM

Friday night I got infected with the Internet Security 2010 virus here at work. I followed the instructions on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...t-security-2010 and after running Malwarebytes twice it was running clean, so I uninstalled and then reinstalled (as that link directed) and ran it a couple times since and it's come up with nothing. I also have run AVG which comes up with nothing.

BUT the computer is running slow still, and if you use the google search bar that is embedded in the Safari web browser it will sometimes bring you to alternate search websites, such as info.com. This also happens when you use the search bar in the browser, and when it brings up the results and you click on the website you want, it will again redirect you to an alternate search site. It doesn't happen everytime, but has happened to me a handful of times today already. I also have gotten a couple of pop ups and I never get pop ups.

Thanks for any help!

Hi SisM,

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to CFScan before saving it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
  • Temporary disable your anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

Hi SisM,

Glad to know that you're OK.

1. Please run your Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Go to update tab and download all updates and then perform a full scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

2. Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply .

3. Please tell me how's your computer running now?

I have to leave work, but will run the kapersky when I get in tomorrow.

The computer is running good now. I haven't had a single pop up or redirect today. Nothing is running slow (not even before the MBAM scan). I look forward to running the kapersky tomorrow and possibly having a clean computer sometime soon. LOL!

  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates
It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently
It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. Thank you so much for all of your help, both of you! While I continue my updates I have just a few questions

Then please go to C:\ > Documents and Settings > Staff > Application Data > Sun > Java > Deployment > cache and delete the entire content of cache folder.

I couldn't get there. I got into "documents and settings" and then into "staff" but in "staff" there is no application data. The folders in there are: unlimitedftp, desktop, favorites, my documents, start menu, viewone, and g2mdlhlpx (this one is not a folder, and I have no clue what it is but apparently is from 11/3/08).

And also

4. Uninstall Combofix
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

When I did this it told me that the file did not exist.

Thanks again!
