 Ok, here goes. First off this site was recommended by a McAfee Maniac - this is how I found you guys. Secondly, from what I can see browsing through - the moderators and helpers know what they are doing - and I can tell you that I for one will greatly appreciate any expertise, advise or guidance so here goes.

I have McAfee Internet Security Suite 7.0 with a privacy fire wall and still got the virus W32/Alemod.e.dll. Basically it redirects you to numerous different websites offering spyware/adware removal tools - as well as to totally lock your system up. After running AOL spyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Hometrend virus scan etc... I finally got the desk top to look like my original and not a black screen saying that I may have spyware, CLICK HERE to remove blah blah blah

I can function but I am at a total loss what to delete or "fix" with HJT to get this virus off my computer since McAfee can't clean it delete it or quarantine it. My log is posted below. Your help is massively appreciated!!!!!!

Thanks in advance!

We can help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to reinfection and we're both just wasting our time.

Click here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en

Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

OK good. Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Click here to download ewido security suite - it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the C:\ drive.

Then open ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin (do not open any folders or open the windows control panel while the scan is in progress).
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Reboot into normal mode and post the smitfiles.txt and report.txt in your next reply.

Daemon,

I see my favorite little devil is on line so I thought while I had a moment I would give you an update.

Sorry for such a delay, while promptness is not my strong point this is stretching it even for me. The hurricane caused some weather issues around here, though we are the fortunate ones, what the victims are presently facing is a million times worse than anything I had.

Anyway, smitRem.exe did not download correctly the first time. Now I can't get their website to pull up at all. Don't know what to do at this point. Had a heckuva time just getting the computer into safemode to find all of this out in the first place.

Still playing with it though!

Glad to hear that you are OK after the storm.

You won't be able to access any sites from Safe Mode if that is what you are trying to do. When you say it didn't download correctly the first time - did you get the file but had an error message when trying to run it?

When I did this originally, it let me download the file from www.smitRem.exe and when I tried to run it I did indeed receive 2 different messages.

#1 when I click on the icon for smitrem.exe it opens and asks me if I am sure that I want to run this file, Unknow Publisher. I click OK. then it goes to :
#2 incorrect file size, try downloading again.

Now I can't even get www.smitRem.exe to pull up. frustrating is too polite of a word at this point.

Anyhow, I did run the edwido .txt file will be below. Smitfraud is still showing up when I run the Spybot Search & Destroy. Even after running edwido with the clean every option box checked.

Hope that all is well and good in the UK. Lucky man to live there - one day I hope to at least be able to visit numerous places over there, so beautiful!!! and those wonderful accents, enough to make a woman go mad!!! lmao.....

Here is my edwido log :

Hi, still a bit messed up there. Let's clean it up some and then if you still can't get the smitrem download, I'll give you a new link.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.bestwebslinks.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.bestwebslinks.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.bestwebslinks.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.bestwebslinks.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.bestwebslinks.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.bestwebslinks.com/search.php?qq=%1
O2 - BHO: HP Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINNT\System32\hp463B.tmp (file missing)

Exit HijackThis when done. Reboot, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.

 Hello to my favorite little devil!

I deleted the files in the HJT that you listed. After that I went back to your original link to smitRem.exe and was able to download it and run the program. I followed the prompts that it gave me then I ran ewido - all done in safe mode.

Here is the HJT after all of this. I will run Mcafee Security Scan and Spybot Search & Destroy and see if it still pulls up the smitfraudc file. Will keep you posted.

have a fabulous day!

Could you post the smitfiles.txt also?

Thanks.

the only type of text file that I could find in the smitRem section is this:

Testing presence of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD ---------

! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD\PSGuard

Deleting ShudderLTD ----------

Checking if HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD is still present ------

Deleting leftovers in registry ------

leftovers deleted!

Not a clue if this is what you are looking for or not. When I finally got this to run yesterday it did not do a "create a log " type thing like hjt or even ewido.

Sorry for the delay. That's not quite what I was expecting but it does have some useful info. Are you still having problems?
