microsoft security essentials wont update

first i have a pc that has an amd 9500 phenon processor a gfx m/b and 4 gigs of ddr2 pc6400 ocz ram with a windows vista ultimate x86 o/s

a couple of days ago my updates on ms security essentials stopped working i tried manually updating and i downloaded the definations from the microsoft site
still wouldn't install so then i tried to check my windows updates and it says this service is not running you may need to reboot i rebooted still nothin updates
i did a restore from th last normal point and that didnt work so i did a restore from the last update restore point still nothing malware bytes shows nothing and security essentials is out of date any help appreciated

i apologize for any inconvience but i was rechecking everything and some prankster had set my clock ahead a few hundred years hope this didnt affect my restore points
but now my updates work
