Hello,

I am working on my friends computer. I am attempting to back up her data so I can reload windows. However, I am unable to do so, because all the files are REad Only. If I attempt to change this attribute by going into the Properties and unchecking "read only", it appears like it is changing it, however, when i go back in, REad only is selected again. I have attempted to use the Attrib command, but that didn't work. I kept getting "Not changing...."
I am also unable to run the System Restore utility, receiving "System Restore isnot able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and then run System Restore again." I have also tried making changes in Safe mode with no luck. I have booted up using Ubuntu as well with no luck.
Any suggestions???

Thanks

dont know if this program will help at all but worth a try

attribute changer

http://www.petges.lu/

and read this off a forum

[1] First you must ''Drag/Copy'' the data file from your CD to your desktop. [I feel there is no way you can unlock the files on a CD]

[2]
After installation you will find there will be no Program ''Desktop'' Icon or any ID of the program in the ''Program Menu Index''!. You will find the program will be shown within the “Right Click” Dropdown Menu
To use click on your “Folder/File” and in the “Drop Down Menu” click on ''Change Attributes

[3]
Next you will have the “Change Attributes” program box showing = Now click on the folder “File Attributes” , uncheck the “Read Only” and if required the = ''Hidden'' = ''Archive'' = ''System'' = [They are all Grey coloured] You may have to mouse click a few times on each until the grey tick is cleared is cleared from the check box.

[3]
Next within the same folder “Check” the ''Recurse folders'' box and then click on the “Apply” button. You will then find all the files within the folder have been modified.

anyway hope it helps

Are you getting "access denied" error messages?

If so...it's because those files require the user to take ownership in order to access them from a different system. Anything in Docs & Settings falls into that category.

The read-only attribute has nothing to do with what I refer to.

If i navigate to to the document's and settings, then the users profile, and I try to drag and drop the desktop or my documents folder over to my external hard drive, the file is not draggable. If I try to copy and paste the folders, I can right click and copy, however when I try to paste to my external drive, I do net get the option to paste. It seems I cannot do anything to the files and folders. So, it isn't like i get any error message, just the options aren't there to do anything. I hope I am helping and not being more confusing in my explanations... I am desperate to find a solution and welcome to any suggestions. Thanks again for any insight. Much appreciated!!

For more information, I am unable to launch any AV software, or browse the internet or anything.

What is the primary reason for reinstalling?
Some infection by any chance?

removed 12 viruses using Malwarebyte's. PC still hanging up while using. Created new profile. Didn't help, things. Ran hijack this... didn't see anything of the ordinary. Ran a defrag. things seemed to improve a bit. ran a Scandisk on startup... a few files were repaired. things started to get worse at this point. thought maybe it was a corrupt pofile. tired copying over data from main profile to a profile i created called Test. after i copied things over, i restarted. things weren't any better, so i decided that it was a windows issue so i attempted to back up the data... this is where i realized that i couldn't ave anything. so i restarted and went into safe mode. still unable to copy data over. restarted normally. still couldn't do copy any data. attempted to run AV software and that wouldn't launch. tried launching Firefox, cannot connect to internet. tired IE, that hangs and won't even open. Thus my plea for help.

That's most likely the reason, you have problems with backing up files and for getting system restore problem.
I'd say, you have two options:
- travel to malware forum and try to solve infection issue
- slave the drive in another computer, so the operating system (plus any infection) doesn't load and back up your files that way

I'd assume, that most likely the infection is resetting files status to "read-only", so if OS, along with viruses won't run, you should be able to retrieve files.
However, since the drive will be connected to another computer, you may want to keep in mind what Louis said. You may need to take ownership of the files, you'll want to back up.
Also, make sure to scan any file, you want to backup, with AV program.
I'd also install Panda vaccine on the other computer master drive, so nothing will autorun from slaved drive: http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/usbvaccine/

I don't want to sound like an idiot, but battling with this all day has worn my brain. Please supply instructions on taking ownership of the files. I appreciate all the help so far! :flowers:

Taking ownership of the files didn't work, unfortunately.
right now I am running Kaspersky boot disk to see if that helps, but I am not optimistic. My next plan is to find another PC to slave the drive into an see if I can access the files that way...
I am banging my head with this one. And it seems the more I try the worse it gets. Argh!
