OK, getting frustrated here. I have a XP Media Center Edition desktop with some issues. Here is the breakdown.

1) On Thursday Night (1/14/10), I get these popups trying to install "Malware Defense". With a quick google search. I see its a scam so I try to kill the install. The install keeps coming back so I keep killing it (in the Task Manager processes).

2) So to stop the madness I install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-malware. It finds some stuff and removed it (yes I lost the log). I have since uninstalled this program.

3) Now my box is in a weird state. Here are a few things I have seen:

a) When I start in non-safe mode, sometimes the icons and Windows menu bar do not appear at all. All I see is the background.
cool.gif Other times it appears to be working fine, but then the Easy Off ad starts playing through the speakers even though no applications are open.
c) Sometimes an IE window open pointing to some website (can't remember the name).

I have tried running ComboFix.exe from safe mode, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Anyone have any suggestions how I can get control of my machine back. Thanks.

OK, I just tried to re-install Malwarebytes' Anti-malware. It hangs at extracting files.

Also I notice that the shut down never works. I have to do a hardware reset to restart.

Here is the DDS log:

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
