Hi - and thanks in appreciation of some help on this problem. I see other people have had it but I guess advice is PC specific, so I've already ran adaware, spybot and i've installed hjt and ran the log - see below. I also use MS antispyware. I noticed that in the MSAS log, a desktop.kazaa redirect to 127.0.0.1 had been allowed (this is my kids PC and theyre not to good with the blocking bit) but I think s&d may have removed this. I've also ran the VX" plug-in, reported a clean system.

Excuse me if i've done any of this wrong because I'm a bit new at this.

Symptoms are as others have reported - antispyware explorer window appearing, error window appearing, small window recommending I download winfixer 2005, and the homepage setting in IE is full of strange characters and will not revert to google.co.uk. Also, none of the desktop, start menu or quick launch icons work for IE, I have to start it from a URL link in one of my e-mails.

Appreciate any help you can provide.

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjj.dll
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkjj - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjj.dll

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjj.dll

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and tell me if your problem is gone. If it is not,

Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Hi

Ok, did all that.

There's a bunch of files in the System32 folder, WPfind spotted the others. The pmkjj.dll is there, but refuses to delete, even in safe mode - says its in use by another program. There's also one called jjkmp.ini, ini2 bak1 bak2 and .tmp . I can get rid of most of these, but deleting the ini file just re-creates another almost immediately, while using the delete file on reboot option in HJT causes the ini to reappear along with a BAK copy. I'm assuming that they also recreate the pmkjj file as that cannot be removed using the delete on reboot option either. Bear in mind this was all done in safe mode. According to the HJT info, the dll probably loads really early in the boot sequence, and this is a bit difficult to fix?

The winpfind file is below, along with the latest hjt file. I think you spotted the problem, and my thanks for that - now I just need a little help removing it???

Thanks again.

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from HERE

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from HERE

Step 2:

Download the file and save it to your desktop:

FixVundo Registry File

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of pmkjj.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the pmkjj.dll's under winlogon click OK.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of pmkjj.dll then click the kill button.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjj.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkjj - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjj.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjj.dll

Click the red circle with the white x and say yes to the delete prompt but no to reboot now
then repeat with any of the reverse named .bak or .ini files

after you have input the last file name then reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

I suppose the only question now is - what caused it, and how do I prevent it in future? Looking at the file creation date, the pmkjj.dll file was on the system before the desktop kazaa thing was allowed to load, so maybe that was just a red herring.

Once again, thanks for your help, donation to follow (with pleasure), and I'm adding a link on my website www.worldtraveller.me.uk so everyone will know where to get some really great help in their moment of need.

Best regards

Robert

Thanks for the link and the donation!

Unfortunately Windows does not secure Internet Explorer by default that well. Follow the directions below and it should greatly decrease your chances of getting infected in the future.

Now that your clean:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Hi

Thanks for the advice. However, while reading your tutorial, I hovered over the "Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important " and a dynamic adlink appeared, urging me to gto back to www.winfixer.com, the very program that the pop-up's kept urging me to download - is this ad supposed to be there, or has another part of the problem just revealed itself?
