Hello everyone!

I am at a loss as to what to do with my system (other than get rid of the DSL that seems to have contributed to this issue) I am overrun with virus programs and hijackers and am unable to eradicate them from my system.

Some information that might be useful:

*I have Windows ME
*I have run Spybot and I get something new everytime I browse (the worst seems to be media motor?)
I have disable system restore permanently set on, I can uncheck the box for disable system restore to give myself a new restoration point, click apply, reboot and it never saves..this I'm assuming is in relation to something that has gotten ahold of my system.

I get a ton of different programs and installers show up on my task list wininstaller, cxdxregt, bundle1, iexplore, multiple rundll32's, etc etc

I have included a HiJack this log and hope this helps, let me know if more information is needed...any help is greatly appreciated!

Shannon :thumbsup:

After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

1. Please download/install/configure/update AdAware.

Follow all the instructions in the following tutorial(Hold off on doing the full scan. We will do these in safe mode.):

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

Restart your computer.

2. Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:

O2 - BHO: URLLink Class - {4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [j3n18jt9] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\j3n18jt9.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZStart] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CXDXREGT.EXE DO0605
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [immin] C:\WINDOWS\MM15201518.A.STUB.EXE
O4 - Startup: Zstart.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\zxinst12.exe
O9 - Extra button: @Home - {9EA21248-3041-4AF4-8868-7C37C0131586} - http://home.excite.com (file missing) (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: Editor - http://home.webwowser.com/Development/editor/Editor.CAB
O16 - DPF: {1C955F3B-5B32-4393-A05D-24B4970CD2A1} - http://stream1000.babenet.com/cabs/videox.cab
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/150fdbb6d7a29b194b05/netzip/RdxIE2.cab
O16 - DPF: {7149E79C-DC19-4C5E-A53C-A54DDF75EEE9} (IObjSafety.DemoCtl) - http://cabs.media-motor.net/cabs/joysaver.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

3. Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\MM15201518.A.STUB.EXE <===file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\j3n18jt9.exe <===file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CXDXREGT.EXE <===file

4. Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

5. Perform a full system scan in Ad-aware and Spybot.

Restart your computer.

6. Please run these two online scans. Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan <====save the scan log and add it to your reply

You should try to delete any files that these scanners are unable to clean. Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.

Restart your computer.

Post another HiJackThis log along with the scan log from the Panda Active scan.

Hi Joshuacat,

Thanks for the welcome and the information :thumbsup: Unfortunately, this stuff is teflon! Below is my updated Hijack log after your instruction...I still have the same problems, and a few new tasks are showing up in my tasklist. The PandaScan didnt return any problems (0 detection of anything) However, the Trend Micro did find one virus "VeryLince" and some usual spyware. I still cannot un-disable system restore (might this be a part of the where the registry is concerned?) Any other help is appreciated, let me know if you need more information, and thanks again!

Okay, thanks for the information you provided me about the VeryLince detection, it helps me with the next steps I will be getting you to complete. We will work on the system restore after some of these symptoms are gone.
A bad system restore point is better than none at all.

After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

1. Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet, we will later.

2. Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:

O4 - Startup: Zstart.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\zxinst12.exe
O16 - DPF: {7149E79C-DC19-4C5E-A53C-A54DDF75EEE9} (IObjSafety.DemoCtl) - http://cabs.media-motor.net/cabs/joysaver.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

3. Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    • Delete Cookies
      This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click OK
  • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
  • When asked to reboot system select No
  • Close CleanUp
Restart your computer.

4. Please download L2m9xfix here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/l2m9xfix.exe

Save it to the desktop and run it. Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear. Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

Then please restart your computer, and post a new HijackThis log as well as the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat.

Excellent job following the steps. You provided a vital piece of information mentioning the VeryLince.

Your log is clean! Great job!

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and enable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help and if there any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BC, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Joshuacat,

You rock! Thank you soo very much for your help the last couple days. I did follow your last instructions, my only problem now is un-disabling (enabling) system restore. I have tried this both in regular and safemode and the box will not stay unchecked. Is this something you have any knowledge about, or should I post it in another forum? Again thanks so much for fixing my computer!

How long have you had this problem?

You could type in the symptoms in our 95/98*Grinler forum.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/Win...5-98-ME-f9.html

We can try to get you fixed up over there. I haven't had that exact problem, but I can probably find the information.

See you there.

I have not really had to check there (system restore settings) until recently, when I had been browsing the forums before I posted this week I saw it somewhere. If this helps, I do know I cannot defrag in regular or safemode.

I am running ME btw.

Again, any help is appreciated you are now one of my top three favorite people in the entire world haha.
