I have a Knoppix 5.0.1 Konqueror that I have never used until now
I need to pull pics. off a sick laptop
It installed fine and recognizes the portable drive

Does it have a Safely Remove USB feature or do I just unplug it?
How do I safely shut it down, just turn it off?
The portable drive has been formatted and used before
It seems I cannot mount the drive
"Cannot determine the filesystem type and none was specified"

I'm clueless
I don;t want to jeopardize corrupting her pictures

Maybe I would be better off with a Hiren's boot CD

why won't my laptop work?

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around

Knoppix 5.0.1 is 2006 vintage and does not have the same NTFS-3G driver as a newer distro would. I would recommend Knoppix 6.2 or Kubuntu 9.10. In the case of the latter, once the CD is booted, you can create a bootable USB key version very easily.

ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNO...09-11-18-EN.iso
http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/CDs/k...esktop-i386.iso

Hiren's boot CD contains *ahem* proprietary software, unlike the FOSS as listed above. Either distro should mount NTFS/FAT or ext3/4 partitions automagically in Dolphin without having to edit fstab.

1) You should be able to "Unmount" the USB (same thing roughly as "Safely Remove USB), by right clicking the drive in the file browser and selecting "Unmount Volume"

2)Assuming there's no GUI button for a safe shutdown just open a terminal and type the command "shutdown" (It's the techie way to shutdown a *nix system, but it works with all so theres no fiddling around trying to find the GUI button)

3)yeah, as the guys above said you're mostlikely gonna need a newer version live CD, especially for vista and win7 file systems.

Yeah, that box is pretty full at my house right now, what with the price of ammo going sky high. LOL should clear at least 100 or more out of the box tomorrow, depending on how much ammo i have.

This How To is for rescuing data from sick or dead Windows PC but the same method will work with any OS.

No operating system is easier or more intuitive to use than Puppy Linux and few are as fully featured
