When updating virus definitions from Symantec during the download when it get to the 'Retrieving files' the live update freezes. When I do ctrl/Alt/Del it shows 'Live update not responding'

Here is the hijack log. From other posts I have read I believe something is not right here.

Hi Viccy, thanks for the help.
OK winupdates fixed with Hijack This and deleted from C:\program files\winupdates\.

Could only run the Housecall scan which found nothing. The Panda scan and WindowSecurity trojan scan would not complete. It seemed like they were not responding. I let them both run for over 15 minutes and nothing. All of these scans only work with Windows Explorer. I normally use Firefox as a default browserand only have dial up service.

The good news is after this I was able to update my Norton virus definitions, ran a scan wihich found and quarantined 2 files infected with the W32Alcra.B virus. The files were Winupdates.exe and Setup.exe.

The bad news now when I go to Start, Run and type regedit I get a message that says the program has tried to excute an invalid intruction and does not open. Is there something available to fix the registry?

Here is the new HJT log. Look forward to your comments and guidance.

I would like for you to run Ewido in Safe Mode and save the log.

To get to safe mode, reboot your computer and begin tapping the F8 key repeatedly. This should bring up a screen with selections and you can use your arrow keys to select Safe Mode.

Let me know how this goes and post the Ewido log along with a new Hijack This log.

Sorry, Ewido is for Windows XP.

Instead, Please run the Housecall online virus scan located at:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Follow the prompts to scan your hard drive for viruses. Select the "Autoclean" option so that Housecall will remove any viruses from your system.
When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Then please run the Panda scan here:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/acti...n_principal.htm ://http://www.pandasoftware.com/produc..._principal.htm ://http://www.pandasoftware.com/produc..._principal.htm ://http://www.pandasoftware.com/produc..._principal.htm Choose to "Disinfect automatically," and follow the prompts. Delete any viruses found, and restart your computer.

Finally, please run the WindowSecurity trojan scan here:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
Remove any trojans found, and restart your computer.

Then, post another Hijack This log and let me know if you have difficulty with any of the scans.

Hi Viccy, OK ran all the suggested online scans. Here are the results.

Housecall..On scan start got a popup error called VSAPI ERROR with this message.
"can not find MEMBOOT.DLL". I clicked OK and scan completed without finding any problems.

Pandascsn...Your link did not work so I when to Pandasoftware's home page and ran the free online active scan. I could not find where to choose "Disinfect automatically" but ran the scan anyway which detected but did not disinfect the following.
Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/Apropos No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\pop5.dll
Adware:Adware/ExactSearch No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\exdl1.exe
Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\pavE3.TMP
Spyware:Spyware/Cydoor No disinfected C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Dummies\dummy.cd_clint.dll
Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\Program Files\Verbatim Store N Go\_Setup.exe

Window Security trojan scan...Ran with no problems. Detected thefollowing file which I deleted. "C:\Windows\System\exul1.exe".

Here is my new HJT log. Look forward to your advice.

Here is an article from Microsoft related to the VSAPI ERROR:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328841#XSL...124120121120120

Disable SpywareGuard:

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

Please download CCleaner from here:
http://www.ccleaner.com
Install and run it, and clean out your Temporary and Temporary Internet Files.

Please run full scans with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot-S&D as follows:
(If you already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 and Spybot 1.4 installed, you can skip the installation steps. If you don't, please uninstall your old versions and install the new ones from the links below.)

Full Ad-Aware Scan
Please download Ad-Aware SE from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Install Ad-Aware and run it. In the bottom-right hand corner, click "Check for updates now". Click "Connect" to download the newest reference file.

Now we will configure Ad-Aware to perform a full scan. In the Ad-Aware main window, click on the gear icon at the top of the screen to open the preferences window. In the "General" window, make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically save log-file
2) Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
3) Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Click the "Scanning" button on the left-hand side and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Scan within archives
2) Scan active processes
3) Scan registry
4) Deep scan registry
4) Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
5) Scan my Hosts file

Please also click on "Select drives & folders to scan" and select your hard drive(s). Then click the "Advanced" button on the left-hand side and make sure all the options under "Log-file Detail Level" are selected. Next, click the "Tweak" button on the left-hand side. Click on "Scanning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Unload recognized processes & modules during scanning
2) Obtain command line of scanned processes
3) Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Click on "Cleaning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Always try to unload modules before deletion
2) During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
3) Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
4) Delete quarantined objects after restoring

Finally, click on "Safety Settings" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically select problematic objects in results lists
2) Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)

Click on "Proceed" to save the preferences. Then please click the "Start" button on the bottom right side to begin a scan. Select "Use custom scanning options" and then click "Next". Ad-Aware will then scan for malware. When it is finished, make sure any objects listed in RED are selected and click "Next" to remove the objects. Then please restart your computer.

Spybot Full Scan
Next, please download Spybot-S&D from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2471
Install Spybot-S&D and run it. Select "Search for updates" and then select all available updates. Click on the drop-down box in the top center to choose a download location nearest to you. Then click "Download updates". When all updates have downloaded, close Spybot-S&D, and then run it again. Click on "Check for problems". When the scan has finished, select any entries listed in red and click "Fix selected problems". Then please restart your computer again.

Try live update with Norton again and let me know how it goes. Post another Hijack This log.

Hi Viccy,
OK I installed and ran CCleaner. Good program.

I already had Ad-Aware SE 1.06r1 and Spybot S&D 1.04. Followed your instructions and ran both. Ad-Awaredid not find any Red items. Spybot S&D found an item called "Targetsavers" which I fixed.

I was able to successfully live update Norton. Ran a virus scan in Safe mode which did not detect any viruses.

I still can not run "regedit". I get a "fatal error has occured" message. Any idea of what is happening here?

Also, what about the items that Pandascan detected but did not disinfect? see previous post. Should I be concerned with these?

Here's my new HJT log. Look forward to your advice.

To restore Regedit.exe:
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.
2. Copy the following text and paste it into the Notepad window.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableRegistryTools"=dword:00000000

3. Click File, and click Save. Save the file to the Desktop as RegedFix.reg.

4. Exit Notepad.

5. Locate and double-click the RegedFix.reg icon on the desktop to import the changes into the registry.

6. When you are prompted, click Yes, and then click OK.

7. Restart the computer.

This should allow the user to access the Registry editor and amend the Keys changed by the trojan.

From C:\Windows\ run Regedit.exe.

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

and reset the values for NoLogoff and Norun to 0.

Restart the computer.

Let me know if that fixes the regedit problem, and post another Hijack This log.

Hi Viccy,

OK REGEDIT4 successfullly imported to registry but after accessing the Registry editor from C:\Windows\rin Regedit.exe when I navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

I do not have the values you indicate. All I have are:

CDRAutoRun = 00 00 00 00
NoDriveTypeAutoRun = 95 00 00 00

So I did not reset any values.

Regedit still does not work from Start...Run.

Here's the new Hjt log. What next?

Insert your windows CD and go Start > Run...

Now type: expand D:\i386\autoexec.nt_ C:\Windows\System32\autoexec.nt
(assuming D:\ is your CD drive letter, hit enter)

Try the regedit program again.

Go to Start, Run, and then type "SFC" (without the quotes).
Select "Extract one file", enter REGEDIT.exe
Enter D:\Win98 (or whatever drive your CD is)
And C:\Windows

Hi Viccy,

OK I successfully extracted the file REGEDIT.exe to C:\Windows.

I can open regedit direct from C drive in Windows Explorer but it stiil will not open from Start...Run..... I keep getting "This program has performed an illegal operastion and will be terminated" message. What else can be done here?

Also I just noticed when starting up the computer, as it goes through the various screens on one screen I see "C:\> Set tvdumpflags=0" Is this of any significance?

Thanks
