I am using the home edition of Windows 7 and for some odd reason today, changing the desktop background is disabled. It says that the administrator disabled it when i am the administrator and it is the only account I'm using. How do i enable changing the background again?

Let's check some registry keys....

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Vista users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
  • Copy the content of the following box into the main textfield:
    :reg
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

I had the same problem after installing a theme with a file name full of symbol characters. I'd like to know a real cure if anyone has one.
Personally I resolved the issue by doing a system restore to the day before I installed the theme. Worked like a charm. At least I know system restore points work ok.
