Have been infected with "thewebsitesurvey.com" virus.

Computer was/is under attack for 5 days, from IP address:

212.117.174.172 & 171

trying to access \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SVCHOST.EXE.

Norton 360 has rejected those attacks, which have occurred every 5 minutes for the last 5 days.

at some point a virus got through and my IE browser was occasionally re-directed to a "survey" site.

After running SPYBOT and PCTools... neither removed the Virus. I called Norton and decided to pay $99.99 for their technical help. Well, 4 days and 5 technicians later, the problem was passed to their research group. THe research group determined two things: one it was a ROOTKIT problem and two they could not fix it!!

I tried to restore my HP computer to a previous set point and failed. Norton suggested a system recovery or a re-format.

I have noted a number of references to this virus on Bleepingcomputer but no insight into the problem as of yet. Thank you for your help.

Thank you for taking a look at my problem. Since my original post on 1/10/2010, I have read a number of similar post to mine:

Browser re-directs, annoying phony surveys, constant attacks on my computer (rejected by Norton) and the creation of hundreds of files in my temporary and application directories, as well as errors that stop my Media Center Software from view mode. All of these issues have been reported by others in the last two weeks.

What has changed:

I have uninstalled old and/or phony programs and excluded others from startup:

Bloomberg, Google Earth, Itunes and GoogleUpdate were removed.
Per the Adobe notice, I updated Adobe.
I Removed and reinstalled Google.

The external attacks from my PC have stopped, but I am getting an occasional "unauthorized access logged (access process data)" message from Norton.

Here is the latest DDS log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  1. Please download OTL from following mirror:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. Push the button.
  6. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thank you! I have been reading your many posts to users that are experiencing similar problems. This appears to be a nasty virus, hopefully soluble. In any case, I am very appreciative of your time and experience.

I started OTL and soon received the error: Windows No Disk -- exception error... Ignore, Retry did not clear the window. Pressing Cancel a few times did the trick and the program coninued to completion w/o error.

Hi,

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Spyware Doctor Antivirus or Norton.

Please also provide a log from gmer to check for rootkits:

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

GMER is running so far w/o error.

TY for the tip on running multiple anti-virus software. I normally just use Norton, though I occassionally run PCTools just to see if it detects anything. Neither were much help is preventing this virus from entering my PC.

disabled internet connection
Turned off Norton anti-virus protection

darn it... Media Center Software started recording -- does it through cable wire -- I stopped GMER, I stopped recording , restarted GMER and it was very, very slow. Rebooted PC to start over.

GMER running again smoothly, but still taking a while... will post as soon as finished. Sorry for the delay.

Hi,

if you can not run gmer, please run mbr and rootrepeal instead:

MBR:
Please download mbr.exe and save it to your root directory, usually C:\ <- (Important!).
  • Go to Start > Run and type: cmd.exe
  • press Ok.
  • At the command prompt type: c:\mbr.exe -t >"C:\mbr.log"
  • press Enter.
  • A "DOS" box will open and quickly disappear. That is normal.
  • A log file named mbr.log will be created and saved to the root of the system drive (usually C:\).
  • Copy and paste the results of the mbr.log in your next reply.

ROOTREPEAL:
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract the contents of RootRepeal.zip, to your desktop.
  • Double click on your desktop.
  • Click on the report tab, then click scan
  • Check all seven boxes:
    Drivers
    Files
    Processes
    SSDT
    Stealth Objects
    Hidden Services
    Shadow SSDT
  • Click Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, Click the Save Report button. Save the log as RootRepeal.txt and post it in your next reply.

Assuming GMER will not run.

Do I need to disconnect from the internet and turn off Norton virus auto-protect to run RootRepeal and MBR? Obviously I will have to reconnect both to download MBR.EXE (already posted a RootRepeal, but will run again) thx

Downloaded MBR and RootRepeal, after turning on Norton. I stay connected to the internet and ran both programs. I ran RootRepeal first. The log is attached.

I followed your MBR.EXE instructions. I went as far as copying/pasting the command fron your post. The result was this:

I was immediately returned to the C:\ prompt. A log file was created, but is was empty!! No other Dos window ever opened up. I tried this a few times with the same result. Including exiting Dos, and starting over. What do I do now?? thx...

Hi,

The mbr log suggests, that you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

bummer, I was afraid of that. I already followed your "identity theft" advice a few days ago. I would still like to try and fix it.

I have a couple of questions:

is it safe to transfer Office documents, JPEG, MPEG and DVR files to my backup storage/new computer? Put simply what files should I AVOID using on this computer, or others, whether I reformat or not? Thx, for all you help.

I will download Combofix and post the results. I would like to try to fix this computer, if possible.

Hi,

globally everything that isn't executable should be safe: So everything that is not a setup, a game, a crack, a tool or a screensaver is probably be safe. Be careful with html, asp, and zip-files as they may get injected with malicious code by some infections as well.

One other risk comes from the flash drive you are connecting to the infected and to sane PCs. To prevent malware spreading over it please do the following:
Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.
