Hello. I am unable to use any search engine. I can get on the web fine through IE8 and click any link on the MSN home page or any of my favorites and go to that page, however when I try to do a search it comes up "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." It does the same thing in firefox. when i try to set my homepage to google it will not even come up and just times out. Here are the logs requested. Please help! Thanks.

Sorry, forgot to add that my E:/ drive is the system drive due to downgrading from Vista to XP.

Let's reset your hosts file.

Please download HostsXpert 4.3
  • Extract (unzip) HostsXpert.zip to a permanent folder on your hard drive such as C:\HostsXpert
  • Double-click HostsXpert.exe to run the program.
  • Click "Restore MS Hosts File".
  • Click OK at the confirmation box.
  • Click "Make Read Only".
  • Click the X to exit the program.
-- Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Has that helped?

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop but rename it Combo-Fix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Nothing really nasty there.

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Avast! or Microsoft Security.

If you are happy to work within the hosts file please navigate to it:

C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/etc

Open the hosts file in notepad and then copy and paste it in your next reply.

I removed Avast! and here are the host files.

Hi firemantcook.

The hosts file looks fine and the PC looks fine too.

I suspect that this is a system problem as opposed to a malware issue.

I would suggest that a post to the XP forum might be useful to you to pursue this problem as this is falling outside the realms of the malware removal forum.

If you wish to come back to me then I will leave this open for five days, after that then you can PM me.

Good luck finding the problem thumbup2.gif

OK, I went to the XP forum and they advised me to reload IE and XP which still did not fix the problem. They also asked me to do a scannow which I tried to do. The problem was that when I run scannow it asked for me to insert my professional XP CD. I am running home edition and have never loaded professional on my computer. The XP forum refered me back here. Any ideas?

Okay, I read the other forum posts and the redirections must be the residue of something else. Let's try something a bit different.

Can you try running HostsXpert again and see whether it allows the reset.

If this fails then try this.

Save HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon to start the program.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
After the final dialogue box it will launch HijackThis.

Click on the scan button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Save the log, and post me it in your next reply.

Thanks thumbup2.gif

When I first open HJT it tells me that "your system denied access to the Hosts file." I click OK and it brings up another popup that says, "your hosts file has invalid linebreaks and HiJack This is unable to fix this. 01 items will not be displayed. Click OK to continue the rest of scan." When I click OK this is the Log I get.

Okay, I think I've got it now. smile.gif

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

We need to execute an OTM script
  1. Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click the icon on your desktop.
  3. Paste the following code under the area. Do not include the word "Code".
    CODE
    :Processes
    explorer.exe
    :Files
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  4. Push the large button.
  5. OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  6. Copy/Paste the contents under the line here in your next reply.
  7. If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
Post the OTM log.

Now run HostsXpert again.

Restore Microsoft's Hosts file. You will get a message stating that there is no hosts file available do you want to create one, say Yes

Please post both DDS logs. Thanks smile.gif
