Hi there, I'm at my wit's end trying to figure out what's wrong with my computer and hopefully someone here can help me out smile.gif The only way I can describe this infection is after being connected to the Internet about 2 hours I can hear my computer start running very loudly, and before I can even stop to see what's happening, something eats up all of my CPU Usage, rendering my computer pretty much useless (gets unbearably slow, sometimes forcing a manual shutdown axesmiley.png ). However sometimes I'll go days without even having a problem. So, if anyone could PLEASE help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Here are the logs..

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  1. Please download OTL from following mirror:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. Push the button.
  6. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

No worries here, I figured you guys probably get loads of people asking for help. smile.gif The last time my computer acted up, I was able to open up my task manager and see what process(es) were eating up all of my memory. Turns out there's like 6 "svchost.exe" running, one of which makes my computer run so slow I have to manually shut it down. Is there only supposed to be one svchost.exe? And if that's the case, how do I get rid of the others? Thanks for your help so far, here are the 2 reports you asked for.

Hi,

it is perfectly normal to have several svchost.exe running. It is a host-process which is used to run several other files. However you should not be running several anti virus programs:

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either McAfee or Avira.

Please run a scan with gmer to check for rootkits:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Hi,

your logs aren't showing any sign of infection? Are you still getting the slow downs? The next time the system starts slowing down, could you please open taskmanager and check which process is eating up the cpu usage?

Yes, it actually happened right after I ran GMER. It's one of the svchost.exe processes. Is there a way to pick out which one it is and get rid of it?

Hi,

please download process explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/sysinte...s/bb896653.aspx

Extract to your desktop and launch it by double-clicking. It is a more advanced task manager in sorts. It should show you which files are executed by svchost.exe. Hovering over the svchost.exe should give you more information as well.

Please provide the files launched by the svchost.exe and the information shown when hovering over it for the process that is eating up your memory.
