I am trying to install a Samsung laser printer on my old Dell XPS T. Samsung support says I need new drivers, but there is nothing listed for my computer in Dell support. Their support wants megabucks to help me. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you tried looking at Samsung?

What is the printer model?

The samsung support person was talking about updating USB and parallel drivers not the printer drivers.

Hi DottieR Just checked the Samsung site for an MS-1740. No such printer.

If you go to > http://www.samsung.com/us/support/download...DownloadMain.do then click on Office below the picture of the lap top and printer another window will open that will help walk you through the driver selection.

updating USB and parallel drivers not the printer drivers

That would be the motherboard or chipset driver

So where do I find that if Dell won't help. Is that what I look for?

I just downloaded the driver from Samsung site. It still doesn't print. And the printer icon and the printer window blinks. A second line in the printer window for spooling blinks off and on.

Did you get a CD with the printer? The required drivers should be on it.

If not then which Windows are you running? 98, XP, Vista, Win7 ?

I have the CD that comes with the printer. I am using XP.

The printer should work with USB or parallel connection. I originally installed it with a parallel cable. The printer printed properly but the status monitor did not work. I think it said something about needing a USB connection. So I got a USB cable, ran the repair/install like it said and the thing would not print although the test page run from the printer is good. So I tried the parallel cable again (a 3rd trip back to Fry's) and now that did not work either. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled. No good. that is when I tried Samsung support and she said I needed new drivers for parallel and USB. Dell support shuttled me to four different departments before they said they wanted $250 to help me. I posted a message on their forum and have had no response. They are usually useless anyway, but one always hopes.

I did use the driver from the Samsung site for the status monitor and it works now. although the printer in useless. Is my 10 year old computer not going to adapt to new hardware?

There are drivers there for the printer too. XP is listed.

when you try to print, what application are you trying to print from? if your ap defaults to a different printer, or to a file writer nothing will print. Make sure you are doing your test print from the properties of the print driver found in your printers folder, under the 1st tab with the print test page button.

sry if this was obvious to you, but gotta cover all the bases and make sure your print jobs are being sent to the correct installed driver.
