switching from laptop screen to external screen

Hi Guys,
I have an acer extensa 5220 ,with a damaged screen ,have been trying to run it via vga cable to an external monitor,during bootup it works but once it leaves the boot up screen it reverts back to the laptop screen ,does anyone have any ideas how i can resolve this ?.

Hold Fn and F5 on the keyboard, to toggle between the displays.
