I use HP mediaCenter PC as a DigitalVideoRecorder. Now I get the BSOD when the machine goes into hibernate mode. I leave the system on all the time so it can wake up and record, and I use hibernate mode to be kinder to the environment.

On blue screen is text: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL_VAL and hiber_iastor.sys

I wandered thru the web and found recommendation to run MicroSoft malware tool. It (windows-kb890830-v3.2.exe) reports: win32/Alureon.F c:\windows\system32\drivers\iastor.sys. And claims to have removed it. But when it put the PC into hibernate mode I get the same BSOD again. And if I rerun the uSoft tool it reports finding the same infected file (iastor.sys).

I also tried using uSoft restore to roll back to a time when the problem didn't happen, but that didn't help. The problem persists.

Thanx, Drew

Here is an update because the symptoms have changed.

Although for quite a while the only problem the PC had was hibernating (and I disabled hibernation and left the PC running), one day I got the BSOD with the message PFN_LIST_CORRUPT. Now things are very bad.

New symptoms:
* firefox can't access internet (but FTP in a cmd.exe window can access the net)
* after a couple of minutes of operation the PC slows so badly it can take minutes to start a program, 100% CPU utilization is reported.
I think avg was listed as top hog process. I killed that and then lsass became the cpu hog.
* can't boot windows in safe mode (prints normal rdisk(0) startup messages but then I get the "we apologize but windows failed to start...")
* can boot into recovery console. It is the only thing that still seems to work.

At this point I don't think I can use windows to download anything, or run anything.

I did remove the drive and check it on another PC (not using it as system disk), and the disk seems fine.

Thanx,
Drew

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  • Please download OTL from following mirror:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

Hi myrti,

Thanx for helping me.

You have requested that I download and run OTL, and then send you the results. I don't think that is possible.

1) I think I can't download anything because firefox can't access the internet. However I can download OTL to a USB stick and probably copy the program onto my sick machine.

2) I believe OTL will not run to completion. When I boot, then log into the machine I have only a about a minute of operation before the system becomes so slow it is effectively stalled. If I hit ctrl-alt-delete it can take 10 minutes for the task manager to appear

Hi,

is there any mode that will stay on for a couple of minutes, so that we can do some preliminary tests and runs? Do you have your windows cd to access the infected PC over recovery console?

>>is there any mode that will stay on for a couple of minutes, so that we can do some preliminary tests and runs?

The PC will run for a couple of minutes, although it does get slower and slower as time goes on. I would be happy to try anything you suggest to see if we are luck and get results. I wanted to let you know that if a test/scan normally took longer than a minute or two I expect that it will never run to completion with the PC in the current state.

>>Do you have your windows cd to access the infected PC over recovery console?

Recovery console is already installed, and last time I checked the PC booted into that mode without any trouble.
The PC is an HP pavillion, and it does not come with Windows install disks.
However HP has a utility to make recovery disks, which I did run before the PC got ill. Also the hard disk is partitioned into C: and D:, where D: is a recovery partition. The HP bios has a boot option to run the recovery process off of d:. I would like to avoid re-installing the OS if I can, because I have a lot of installed programs that would require a lot of work to reinstall.

I am at work right now (eastern US time zone), so any experiments on the PC will have to be done at night. Although I could consider bringing the machine into work tomorrow if that meant I could respond quickly to your suggestions.

Thanx,
Drew

Hi,
ok, please try to run OTL, it should not take more than a minute or two.

In addition (or after a reboot) try to run the following scan:

Please download SystemLook from jpshortstuff and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click the SystemLook and copy/paste the following into the box
    :filefind
    iastor.*
  • Hit the Look button. Let it finish the scan
  • A log will then pop-up to your Desktop.. Post the content of the log here in your next reply

To prevent infections spreading from your infected PC to your clean machine over the flash drive, please do the following on your clean machine:

Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

Let me know if you run into any problems, for example when the scans take to much time.

Hi myrti,

I had very good luck.

* using spare PC and USB mem stick, installed Flash_Disinfector, copied OTL and SystemLook
* booted sick Hp (network cable disconnected) and logged in, inserted memory stick
* ran OTL scan (scan all users). Left the mem stick inserted, it shows up as removable drive F:
It popped open a new window during the scan(windows no disk, exception processing message). I hit continue/cancel/tryAgain until message went away
Saved OTL.txt log. I did not see Extra.txt log file
* ran SystemLook(filefind iastor*). I realize forgot the period before the wildcard, but I think we got what we want.
* Copied the log files to the memory stick and shutown the PC

The HP PC ran normally during all of this. I didn't connect the PC to the net, and did not run any browsers. I had turned off AVG when the PC started acting crazy last week. It continues to be turned off.
Thanx, Drew

Hi,
  • Restart your computer
  • Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
  • Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
  • You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.
  • At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

    set AllowAllPaths=TRUE
  • At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

    cd C:\windows\system32\drivers
  • At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
    ren iastor.sys iastor.bak
  • At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

    copy C:\cmdcons\iastor.sys C:\windows\system32\drivers\iastor.sys
  • The command should then show 1 file(s) copied. At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
  • At the next prompt type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

    exit
Windows will now begin loading.

Is the PC more stable now?

Hi myrti,

I made one mistake in your instructions but it things turned out OK. When choosing the recovery console installation I selected D:\MiniNT (from the HP recovery partition) instead of windows. Despite that, I successfully replaced C:\windows\system32\drivers\iastor.sys with a copy from C:\windows\system32\drivers. I attached the PC to the net, rebooted, logged in to personal account and tested things.

* The PC can now enter hibernate mode, and wake up from hibernate mode without any problems (BSOD).
* Firefox and IE can access the web again
* Windows now successfully runs in safe mode

I think the PC is healed!!!!

I will do two things different in the future which may help.
1) Switch my account I normally use to a limited privileges, and do all the system admin stuff with an unrestricted account
2) install sandboxie, and do all web browsing from within the sandbox. Infections won't be able to escape from the sandbox to the rest of the computer.

Thank You so much for your help. I will donate to help others to get the service I received.
Drew

Hi,

please don't leave just yet. :( I would like to do a couple of checks first.

First of all please run a scan with Eset to check that nothing is left:
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image

The PC has been running the ESET scan for 2 hours, and it is 30% done. I will post the results when it hopefully finishes.

ESET has an option (checkbox) to remove threats, which I did not enable. So ESET ran in scan mode only. I hope that is what you wanted.

Hi,

Please remove the following files, from your system:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\blackster.scr
C:\WINDOWS\system32\critical_warning.html
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\iastor.bak

While they are not dangerous on their own, they definitely belong to malware and should not remain on your system.

Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running apps. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.

TFC only cleans temp folders. TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail. TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

Please also update your software:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 18.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.
Your Adobe Reader is also out of date. Please uninstall it and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed toolbars unless you really want them.

Let me know if you run into any problems,

regards myrti

temp files "cleaned", the specific files your requested were deleted, and Java was updated.

I haven't noticed any abnormal behavior from the PC.
