how did you save them? you can't see the unformatted drive can you??
I have ubuntu installed inside my vista machine & I have a 10gb partition unformatted on my hdd & I cannot see it when I'm in ubuntu, so I can't think of any way to save the files.
you could try a data recovery program like recova... http://www.piriform.com/recuva (its free)

good luck

Thanks for all the replies! I must have had a usb problem. The drive re-appeared, and the files were still there, and accessible. The drive was formatted...go figure. PCs operate in mysterious ways!!!
